Dublin South West representative Se\u00e1n Crowe has\u00a0said that\u00a0the Government decision to sell Bord G\u00e1is Energy\u00a0for \u20ac1.1 billion is yet another bad news story for consumers and Irish taxpayers who invested a massive amount of public money in the company.<\/p>\n
Crowe\u00a0said that the sale would also undermine the future potential for the company to become a leading player in the renewable energy market under state direction.<\/p>\n
Deputy\u00a0Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0said:<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo weeks ago\u00a0Sinn F\u00e9in welcomed the fact that Minister Rabbitte had rejected an earlier bid as undervaluing the company. In our opinion, this offer\u00a0undermines the potential\u00a0value of\u00a0Bord G\u00e1is Energy. When the sale was\u00a0first discussed it\u00a0was conservatively\u00a0estimated to be worth up to \u20ac1.5 billion.<\/p>\n
\u201cHad that initial price been realised, the sale would still represent a shortsighted decision given the massive potential facing the Irish energy sector over the next decade.<\/p>\n
“Bord G\u00e1is Energy is already a significant stakeholder in wind energy and\u00a0was poised to further expand its interests in this area.\u00a0That new area of huge\u00a0potential\u00a0will be worth far more in jobs and growth\u00a0than the monetary\u00a0sale price,\u00a0as the proportion of electricity generated by wind increases and expands across the island of Ireland.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the previous experience of the infamous Eircom sale is anything to go by and if the current\u00a0operations of Centrica who control British Gas are any\u00a0indicator, then Irish consumers will pay heavily for this decision in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
