Sinn F\u00e9in TD for Dublin South West Se\u00e1n Crowe has welcomed clarification by Minister Varadkar that there are no immediate\u00a0plans to introduce multiple tolls on the M50. The response followed\u00a0leaks and media\u00a0reports that suggested he would\u00a0be implementing NRA proposals\u00a0to bring in\u00a0new tolls in 2014.<\/p>\n
Deputy Crowe said:<\/p>\n
“There will be a sigh of relief from drivers and commuters who use the M50\u00a0that\u00a0there\u00a0are no plans for these charges. Multiple tolling on the M50 would have been a disaster for motorists, particularly those commuting long distances for work. Many\u00a0\u00a0families\u00a0are already hard pressed and\u00a0can’t afford to fork out extra cash getting to and from work.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf there are real problems with overcrowding at peak times on the M50 then the solution is to improve public transport rather than punish commuters who have no option but to drive to work.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis government has cut public transport budgets, increased fares numerous times and Minister Varadkar has a record of stoking industrial disputes in companies like Bus \u00c9ireann and Dublin Bus.<\/p>\n
