Crowe disagrees with judge on controversial Tallaght bridge<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

Sinn F\u00e9in TD for Dublin South West, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has said he disagrees with Judge Anthony Halpin\u2019s call to close and demolish a footbridge in the Tallaght area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFirstly I want to pass on my condolences to the family of Mr. Dale Creighton who was brutally murdered at the footbridge at St. Dominic\u2019s road.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important that we review security following the recent tragedy at this location, but it is my belief that demolishing this bridge would have a negative impact on the local community, particularly people living on the St. Dominic\u2019s area.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis bridge is a vital piece of Tallaght infrastructure. It is used on a constant basis linking the St. Dominic\u2019s area with Tallaght Village. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo date, I am aware of no one in the Tallaght area who wishes to see this bridge removed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we were to follow Judge Anthony Halpin\u2019s logic on this occasion, it is highly unlikely that there would be a pedestrian bridge left in county Dublin. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe caged arch feature of the bridge is in place to prevent projectiles being thrown, children climbing, and of course, suicide attempts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen a Circuit Court Judge makes a recommendation it is vital that local and national politicians consider their advice. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI personally believe that the lighting surrounding the bridge needs to be enhanced and a number of environmental works be carried out with a particular emphasis on the St. Dominic\u2019s side near the school and along the river. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe completion of the apartment block shells at the bottom of the bridge would also greatly enhance pedestrian security, and they should be completed or demolished.<\/span><\/p>\n

“In my opinion it is vitally important that both young and old have access to this bridge to cross a busy dual carriage way and access the services they require in Tallaght Village.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJudge Halpin\u2019s remarks while well-meaning will not solve the potential for more attacks, but enhanced policing and the elimination of darkened hiding spots will increase confidence and security in the area.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
