Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Se\u00e1n Crowe TD, has described reports\u00a0that a Chinese man has been sentenced to death, by lethal injection as disturbing.\u00a0 A Chinese court found seven men guilty of the murder of Chen Li Ming in Dublin in 2002. The case remains officially unsolved in Ireland.<\/p>\n
Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n
\u201cI am extremely concerned and disturbed that a Chinese man has been convicted and now faces the death penalty in China, for allegedly murdering a man in Dublin in 2002. Six other men have also reportedly been convicted for the murder which still\u00a0remains officially unsolved in this jurisdiction.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe details of the murder of Chinese national Chen Li Ming, in Dublin in 2002 sound horrific, and unfortunately, the crime still remains unsolved here.<\/p>\n
\u201cReports in the media state that An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na assisted the Chinese authorities\u2019 investigating the case, after they received assurances that nobody would face the death penalty over the murder. These assurances would appear to have been ignored and broken.<\/p>\n
\u201cIreland has quite rightly outlawed capital punishment and has worked internationally to try and ensure that capital punishment is banned throughout the world.<\/p>\n
“From our own recent history, we know that many innocent people suffered miscarriages of justice, and would have been killed if capital punishment was in place in this, or neighbouring jurisdictions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI understand this incident has quite rightly\u00a0caused a diplomatic incident and strained relations between Ireland and China.<\/p>\n
“The Department of Foreign Affairs clearly needs to\u00a0get to the bottom of how this happened, and crucially, how\u00a0mutually agreed State assurances were supposedly trampled on and then ignored.<\/p>\n
“This recent\u00a0conviction, and the Chinese Government response, has potentially changed the growing close\u00a0relationship between our two countries, particularly\u00a0in recent years.<\/p>\n
“The Department of Justice will also need to review and evaluate\u00a0any further Garda or judicial co-operation with the Chinese authorities\u2019 in future criminal\u00a0cases following\u00a0this incident.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
