{"id":2177,"date":"2015-05-15T13:49:55","date_gmt":"2015-05-15T13:49:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=2177"},"modified":"2015-05-15T13:49:55","modified_gmt":"2015-05-15T13:49:55","slug":"crowe-welcomes-dunnes-pay-rise-but-union-recognition-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-welcomes-dunnes-pay-rise-but-union-recognition-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowe Welcomes Dunne\u2019s Pay Rise But Union Recognition Needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking in response to the news that Dunne\u2019s Stores have agreed to give its staff a three percent pay increase, Dublin South West TD Se\u00e1n Crowe, has said that while he welcomed the announcement, the company needs to realize that this is the 21st Century and recognize their employees union Mandate.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI welcome that Dunnes Stores have agreed to a 3% pay rise for their workers but they need to follow through with recognition of their workers Trade Union, Mandate. This is the 21st Century and senior Dunne\u2019s management need to wake up to this reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDunne\u2019s and other supermarket multiples also need to eradicate the awful practice of zero hour contracts that trap workers into poverty wages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVulnerable low paid workers need to have some\u00a0 security around the number of hours they work or any proposed\u00a0 pay rise while significant, will have no long term benefit for its employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf an employer reduces hours then the pay increase becomes virtually meaningless.\u00a0 A pay increase is always welcome, but it must be underpinned by contracts that give the employee a degree of certainty around working hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA cornerstone of decent work should be job security and this has to include a mechanism where employees are guaranteed decent and secure earning from week to week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDunne\u2019s as an employer seems to see nothing wrong with paying its staff minimum rates of pay and then thinks it\u2019s acceptable to have over 80% of its staff on \u2018flexible contracts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis race to the bottom in terms of pay, insecurity of hours and the failure of companies like Dunne\u2019s to recognise and engage with unions is not acceptable in any progressive civilized society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExploiting workers benefits no one.
