Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Se\u00e1n Crowe TD, has\u00a0welcomed the multi country agreement that will end a 12 year standoff\u00a0over Iran\u2019s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n
Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n
\u201cThis Agreement is a victory for dialogue and it has proved all the negative naysayers wrong.<\/p>\n
“I, along with many others, have argued that dialogue, rather than\u00a0threats and sanctions, were the only viable way of resolving this issue.<\/p>\n
“Sinn F\u00e9in have long argued for a new approach to Iran and\u00a0its people.\u00a0We believe that the Irish Government should reopen its Embassy in\u00a0Tehran and have argued consistently for the European Union\u00a0negotiators to press forward for a deal.<\/p>\n
\u201cIran is an important country in the Middle East and attempts to isolate them\u00a0politically and economically from the international community were\u00a0always a negative development.<\/p>\n
\u201cIran had signed up to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and\u00a0under this treaty it always had a right to develop nuclear technologies\u00a0for civilian and peaceful purposes.<\/p>\n
“Iranian religious and political leaders have publicly stated that the\u00a0making or possession of a nuclear weapon is morally wrong and against\u00a0their religious ethos.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately the only country with nuclear weapons in the Middle\u00a0East, as well as a non-signatory to the NPT, Israel has opposed this positive\u00a0Agreement.<\/p>\n
\u201cSaudi Arabia has also sought to thwart the deal, which is not\u00a0surprising considering their own selfish interests in the region that\u00a0has increasing led to the rise of well armed, funded, and trained\u00a0fundamentalist Jihadi groups.<\/p>\n
“I commend all those individuals, NGO’s, Governments, and negotiators\u00a0who have consistently argued for dialogue over sanctions and\u00a0aggression.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis deal is a game changer and truly historic. It\u00a0opens the potential to move in a new direction and is a\u00a0positive boost to many others across the globe who are engaged in conflict\u00a0resolution.<\/p>\n
“It has the potential to break the log jam and free the very real\u00a0potential of greater co-operation and cohesion in tackling problems\u00a0of conflict, sovereignty and self determination for people living in\u00a0this region.”<\/p>\n
