{"id":2287,"date":"2015-09-01T14:47:05","date_gmt":"2015-09-01T14:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=2287"},"modified":"2015-09-08T09:46:14","modified_gmt":"2015-09-08T09:46:14","slug":"st-vincent-de-paul-face-unprecedented-pressure-for-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/st-vincent-de-paul-face-unprecedented-pressure-for-support\/","title":{"rendered":"St Vincent De Paul Face Unprecedented Pressure for Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>St Vincent De Paul Face Unprecedented Pressure for Support<\/p>\n<p>Dublin South West representative Se\u00e1n Crowe TD has described reports<br \/>\nof up to 10,000 struggling families across Tallaght and Clondalkin<br \/>\nbeing supported by St Vincent de Paul (SVP) with back-to-school cost<br \/>\nas unprecedented but hardly surprising.<\/p>\n<p>Crowe said that traditionally at this time of year with children<br \/>\nreturning to school there is huge financial pressures on parents with<br \/>\nclearly the buzz talk of a recovery not filtering into the mind-set<br \/>\nof these families.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an unprecedented demand on the St Vincent De Paul<br \/>\nparticularly at this time of the year as more and more parents<br \/>\nstruggle and are turning the charity to meet the growing<br \/>\nback-to-school costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs children return to school this week, the\u00a0 St Vincent De Paul is<br \/>\nexpecting to pay out over a \u20ac100,000 to assist over 10,000 hard<br \/>\npressed parents with the cost of fees, books, uniforms and other<br \/>\nancillary costs in Tallaght and the Clondalkin area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the families are new and reflect the growing amount of cash<br \/>\npoor individuals and family units.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe talk of recovery and a new beginning is nonsensical and seems like a<br \/>\nmillion miles away. The recovery buzz words have not filtered into the<br \/>\nmind-set of many of these families struggling to make ends meet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemands on some parents locally have been exasperated in recent weeks,<br \/>\nas many families were left waiting for the Government\u2019s<br \/>\n\u2018back-to-school\u2019 grant \u2013 a payment which covers a fraction of a<br \/>\nchild\u2019s back-to-school costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Back to School Allowance is available to a small cohort of<br \/>\nfamilies but many complain that aside from the delay it is not fit for<br \/>\npurpose, with the gap between the allowance and the cost of sending a<br \/>\nchild to school growing every year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently the means tested grant is available for children between 4<br \/>\nyears &#8211; 11years is 100 euro, between 12 years \u2013 22 years, it is 200<br \/>\neuro, with the stipulation that the student between the age of 18<br \/>\nyears and 22 years has to be attending second level education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith many families already crippled by austerity measures and<br \/>\nincreased charges, the biggest worry at this time of the year is<br \/>\nsourcing expensive new uniforms and other additional equipment to send<br \/>\ntheir children to school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack to School Cost continue to rise with many families relying on<br \/>\ncharities like St Vincent De Paul for additional support.
