Dublin South West representative Se\u00e1n Crowe TD has called on the
\npublic to get behind Dublin’s Firefighters and support their demands
\nfor critically low staffing levels to be addressed.<\/p>\n

Crowe said that the huge vote (96% of SIPTU members balloted for
\nindustrial action) reflects the widespread concerns shared by
\nFirefighters that the service is being run down to a critical level
\nand that any reduced service is going to impact on safety and people’s
\nlives.<\/p>\n

Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n

“Dublin Fire Brigade have voted in favour of industrial action, up to
\nand including strike action around plans to row back on the recruitment
\nof new Firefighters.<\/p>\n

“96 per cent of SIPTU have taken the unprecedented step and voted for
\nindustrial action with 87 per cent voting for strike action in a
\nrecent ballot.<\/p>\n

“Staff shortages have reached a \u201ccritical point”, with members being
\nforced to do huge amounts of overtime as there is no cover for people
\nout sick, on holidays or having retired.<\/p>\n

“The decision to contain recruitment within a closed panel has
\npreviously exacerbated the problem and doesn’t make any sense to
\ncontinue with this practice.<\/p>\n

“Staff shortages also mean that\u00a0 crew levels can be down by as much
\nas 15 to 20% on what they should be, and this is seriously impacting
\non the level of cover across the greater Dublin area.<\/p>\n

“Any reduced service will inevitably impact on safety and directly on
\npeoples lives.Reduced staffing also puts firefighters’ lives and their
\nsafety at a an even greater risk.<\/p>\n

“Behind the threat of strike action is the unpalatable reality that
\nthe fire service in Dublin is not up to the high standards\u00a0 that we
\nhave come to demand and expect.<\/p>\n

“A Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government
\ndirective makes recommendations in relation to retained fire-fighting
\ncrew levels which firefighters believe will pose a threat to public
\nhealth and safety.<\/p>\n

“Dublin Fire Brigade representatives estimate that the staff cohort is
\ncurrently at 70 firefighters below the required number to meet safety
\nstandards, with this gap\u00a0 expected to rise to 100 by January 2016.<\/p>\n

“I am calling on the Dublin public to support the just demands of
\nthese firefighters who are taking a stand\u00a0 for safety and a credible
\nfire service.<\/p>\n

“Environment Minister Alan kelly needs to use his office to urgently
\naddress the firefighter shortage and Dublin’s pending fire safety
\ncrisis.”<\/p>\n
