Homelessness Unprecedented As Government\u00a0 Confidence Vote Passes<\/p>\n
Dublin South West representative Se\u00e1n Crowe TD described the
\nGovernment’s vote of confidence in the Taoiseach Enda Kenny, on the
\nsame day that Dublin Simon Community had said that the number of people
\nsleeping rough and in emergency accommodation had become a “humanitarian
\ncrisis” as sickening.<\/p>\n
Crowe said that the confidence vote was another indication that the
\nGovernment and its backbenchers were blind to the reality facing many
\nvulnerable individuals and families.<\/p>\n
Deputy Crowe said;<\/p>\n
\n“On the day that Simon the homeless charity quite rightly described the
\nGovernment\u2019s response to the housing and homeless crisis as “too
\nlittle too late”, the Government proceeded to use its massive majority in
\nLeinster House and pass a vote of confidence in its leadership.<\/p>\n“Last year 1,600 individuals were stuck in emergency accommodation now
\nthere are 2,298 – 1,275 of whom are children.<\/p>\n“On the day of the confidence vote in Taoiseach Enda Kenny the charity
\nsaid it counted 120 rough sleepers In Dublin, the highest number it
\nhas recorded so far this year.<\/p>\n“People are living rough on our streets sleeping in doorways, in
\nparks, in tents and out in the open.<\/p>\n“This is a scandal which the Government and its backbenchers clearly
\nfind acceptable \u2013 they either do nothing or else introduce policy
\nmeasures that make the situation worse<\/p>\n“What we need is action to ensure housing for all who need it and an
\nimmediate increase in rent supplement and the Housing Assistance
\nPayment.<\/p>\n\u201cWe also need legislation to protect tenants in the Private Rental
\nSector so they have greater rent certainty and increased security of
\ntenure.<\/p>\n\u201cWe have a national emergency on our hands which can only be solved by
\ndirect and urgent intervention from government.<\/p>\n“We have a homeless humanitarian crisis and the government and its
\nbackbencher in a brazen and breathtaking manner ignores reality and
