Government Reliance on Developers for Housing \u2018Foolish and Mistaken\u2019<\/p>\n
Dublin South West representative Se\u00e1n Crowe TD has said the
\nGovernment’s over reliance on Private Developers to deliver housing
\naccommodation is foolish and mistaken. Crowe was responding to new
\nfigures that home building is down in Dublin from a high of 14,375 in
\n2006 to 2,075 last year.<\/p>\n
Deputy Sean Crowe said<\/p>\n
“The Government\u2019s reliance on the private sector and private
\ndevelopers to deliver housing accommodation in Dublin is foolish and
\nmistaken.<\/p>\n
“Dublin needs 8,000 new homes every year but home builds are down from
\na high of 14,375 in 2006 to 2,075 last year.<\/p>\n
“Private developers are failing to build and deliver homes for the
\npeople of Dublin and this the primary cause of spiralling rents
\nincreases in the rental sector.<\/p>\n
“What is needed is a Government funded housing programme for home
\nbuilding in Dublin. We urgently need social and affordable homes to
\nmeet current demand and that of an increasing population.<\/p>\n
“The number of social housing units not being built is alarming with
\nGovernment plans for just 1750 by the end of 2017 across the state and
\njust 168 in Dublin in that time period.<\/p>\n
“This snail\u2019s pace of private construction and the tiny amount of
\nsocial housing construction will only lead to a continuation of the
\nrent increases we have seen in recent years. Rents have gone up 35%
\nsince 2011.<\/p>\n
“We clearly need a major investment in social housing construction on
\nan annual basis building at least 7000 social housing units a year. We
\nalso need rent regulation and rent certainty to stabilise the market
\nas well as an increase in rent supplement in order to keep tenants at
\nrisk of homelessness in their own home.\u201d<\/p>\n
“South Dublin County Council along with other local authorities has
\nthe development land to meet the needs of Dublin. What is\u00a0 lacking is
\nGovernment funding to build on this land.\u00a0 Minister Kelly continues to
\npromise that funding resources are not the problem but his reliance on
\nthe private sector to deliver accommodation is foolish and won’t
\ndeliver for families and individuals desperately seeking a permanent
\nplace that they can call home.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
