Sinn F\u00e9in TDs put forward a motion calling on the Government to abolish the Universal Social Charge. Text of Motion Below<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Motion<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n That D\u00e1il \u00c9ireann, recognises that:<\/span><\/p>\n The Universal<\/span> Social<\/span> Charge<\/span> is an unjust and regressive tax, bearing down most heavily on those least able to afford it;<\/span><\/p>\n The Universal<\/span> Social<\/span> Charge<\/span> affects people earning as little as \u20ac77 per week;<\/span><\/p>\n The Universal<\/span> Social<\/span> Charge<\/span> is indiscriminate and affects someone earning \u20ac100,000 at the same rate as someone earning \u20ac16,016;<\/span><\/p>\n Low income workers, including medical card holders, working lone parents and working widows, who were exempt from the health and income levies which the Universal<\/span> Social<\/span> Charge<\/span> replaced, are no longer exempt;<\/span><\/p>\n Coupled with the changes to tax credits and bands introduced in Budget 2011, the Universal<\/span> Social<\/span> Charge<\/span> has increased the burden of taxation on the working poor;<\/span><\/p>\n Even though the levy system was flawed, there was a greater level of progressivity in it; therefore D\u00e1il Eireann calls on the Government to:<\/span><\/p>\n – Abolish the Universal<\/span> Social<\/span> Charge<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n – As an interim measure reinstate the health and income levies;<\/span><\/p>\n – Conduct an immediate impact assessment of levies as part of overall reform towards a streamlined and progressive taxation system.<\/span><\/p>\n – Pearse Doherty, Gerry Adams, Miche\u00e1l Colreavy, Se\u00e1n Crowe, Dessie\u00a0Ellis, Martin Ferris, Sandra McLellan, Mary Lou McDonald,<\/span><\/p>\n P\u00e1draig Mac\u00a0Lochlainn, Jonathan O\u2019Brien, Caoimhgh\u00edn \u00d3 Caol\u00e1in, Aengus \u00d3 Snodaigh,\u00a0Brian Stanley, Peadar T\u00f3ib\u00edn.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Sinn F\u00e9in TDs put forward a motion calling on the Government to abolish the Universal Social Charge.
