Urgency needed to tackle suicide in Ireland \u2013 Crowe<\/p>\n
Speaking \u00a0in \u00a0the \u00a0D\u00e1il \u00a0today on the issue of suicide Sinn F\u00e9in TD Se\u00e1n
Crowe, \u00a0a \u00a0patron \u00a0of \u00a0phone counselling and awareness service Teenline,
said \u00a0the system in place to support vulnerable children in some schools
is not working.<\/p>\n
Deputy \u00a0Crowe \u00a0also \u00a0raised the need for chill out rooms in hospitals to
take patients away from the bedlam in accident and emergency units.<\/p>\n
He said:<\/p>\n
\u201cLast \u00a0year \u00a0a young lad from a neighbouring constituency took part in a
play as part of a suicide awareness programme. \u00a0Having taken part in it,
one \u00a0would \u00a0have \u00a0expected \u00a0him \u00a0to \u00a0realise \u00a0the pain and suffering his
family, \u00a0friends and colleagues would go through, but he ended up taking
that path.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn \u00a0his \u00a0first \u00a0anniversary \u00a0another kid from the same school took that
path. \u00a0 Support \u00a0is \u00a0available \u00a0in \u00a0that \u00a0school. \u00a0 I \u00a0asked \u00a0one of his
schoolmates how he felt and how he was affected. \u00a0He told me support was
available but that if they wanted counselling, they slipped a note under
the door of the school principal. \u00a0Then they were called out of class.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf \u00a0one \u00a0is not a hard chaw \u2013 many of these kids are not \u2013 they will be
asked \u00a0why \u00a0they \u00a0were \u00a0called out and the principal wanted to see them.
Young men and boys do not want people to know that they need counselling
or help. \u00a0The system in place in that school does not work.<\/p>\n
\u201cI \u00a0know \u00a0of a volunteer worker who was involved in counselling and came
across \u00a0a \u00a0young \u00a0girl of 15 years who talked about taking her own life.
As \u00a0there \u00a0was \u00a0no \u00a0adult \u00a0at \u00a0home, she was brought to the accident and
emergency \u00a0unit. \u00a0 Having \u00a0built \u00a0up \u00a0a \u00a0relationship with the girl, the
volunteer \u00a0who \u00a0acted as advocate could not remain with the girl because
there was no family link.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe \u00a0accident and emergency unit was bedlam at a time, but the girl had
been \u00a0brought \u00a0in \u00a0on her own. \u00a0If there was a chill room as part of the
hospital \u00a0system, \u00a0an \u00a0advocate \u00a0could remain with the person concerned.
There \u00a0is \u00a0a \u00a0need \u00a0for \u00a0the \u00a0system \u00a0to \u00a0realise \u00a0that \u00a0when people are
vulnerable, \u00a0they \u00a0need \u00a0to \u00a0sit outside the madness of the accident and
emergency unit. \u00a0We all know such stories.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe \u00a0must \u00a0set targets. \u00a0Other speakers referred to the number of deaths
on \u00a0the \u00a0roads \u00a0and \u00a0the amount of money spent in tackling that problem.
There \u00a0is \u00a0no \u00a0urgency \u00a0in \u00a0tackling this issue. \u00a0We must set targets to
