Examiner Appointed to Debenhams Retail Ireland – A Worrying Development says Crowe<\/p>\n
Dublin South West TD Se\u00e1n Crowe has voiced his concern at the news
\nthat the High Court has recently appointed an Interim Examiner to
\nDebenhams Retail (Ireland).<\/p>\n
Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said.<\/p>\n
\u201cDebenhams currently employs 1,415 people and with appointment of an
\nInterim Examiner those jobs are clearly at risk. Every effort must be
\nmade to ensure that as many of\u00a0 jobs as possible are protected and
\nsaved.<\/p>\n\u201cDespite all the previous government’s talk of recovery we are still
\nseeing downward pressures in the retail sector \u2013 even in more upmarket stores like Debenhams.<\/p>\n\u201cDebenhams have 11 stores right across the state and this is worst
\npossible last thing that workers and their families in many towns and
\ncities want to hear.<\/p>\n\u201cDebenhams have large retail store in the Square Tallaght and I have
\ntalked to some of its staff who are all extremely worried about its
\nfuture and their employment.<\/p>\n\u201cAs one worker explained to me \u2018it\u2019s not as if there is a huge amount
\nof other options outside the low subsistence wages currently on offer
\nin retail and in other sectors.\u2019<\/p>\n\u201cAside from the impact on workers,their families and the local
\neconomy they are also anchor tenants in many shopping centres right
\nacross the state. I am also mindful of the very real and
\nknock-on-consequences of a potential closure or a scaling down of any
\nof their retail facilities<\/p>\n\u201cI am calling on the new Minister for Jobs, Mary Mitchell O\u2019Connor,
\nto take a \u2018hands on\u2019 approach to this developing situation, making
\nevery effort to minimise job losses and ensure that this issue will be
