{"id":261,"date":"2011-04-27T09:14:17","date_gmt":"2011-04-27T09:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/education-cuts-hurt-disadvantaged-children-crowe\/"},"modified":"2011-04-27T09:14:17","modified_gmt":"2011-04-27T09:14:17","slug":"education-cuts-hurt-disadvantaged-children-crowe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/education-cuts-hurt-disadvantaged-children-crowe\/","title":{"rendered":"Education cuts hurt disadvantaged children \u2013 Crowe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial Black; font-size: small;\"><strong>Education cuts hurt disadvantaged children \u2013 Crowe <\/strong><\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Speaking as he attended the three national teachers\u2019unions conferences, Sinn F\u00e9in Spokesperson on Education Se\u00e1n Crowe has hit out at Minister Ruair\u00ed Quinn\u2019s refusal to reverse the cuts that have been a millstone around the neck of the education system.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Deputy Crowe said that education cuts hurt disadvantaged children hardest and urged the Minister to bear this in mind when engaging in his proposed spending review.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Deputy Crowe said:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u201cAs an opposition party spokesperson on Education Minister Ruair\u00ed Quinn correctly pointed to the fact that the education sector cannot take any further cuts. He correctly stated that the cap that has been placed on the number of Special Needs Assistants will mean that children with Special Educational Needs will not receive the help they deserve in order to see them through their education.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u201cThe Minister was very right in his assessment back then but what he is doing now is very wrong. He has refused to reverse any of the previous budget cuts brought about by the previous Fianna F\u00e1il government, he has said that he will not lift the cap on Special Needs Assistants and is currently examining ways to further cut resources from the education sector.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u201cEducation cuts hurt disadvantaged children the hardest \u2013 those with special needs, those from disadvantaged communities, those who are new to the country. The Minister knows this and I would urge him to bear this in mind when engaging in his proposed spending review.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u201cOf course savings must be made in the public sector and of course wasteful spending must be tackled but this has to start at the top \u2013 by cutting TDs\u2019 and Senators\u2019 wages, by ending the culture of bonuses and obscene salaries in the state and semi-state sector, by asking those who have most to pay most.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u201cThe education of our children and providing for disadvantaged children from all communities must not come second to paying off private bank debt and servicing the EU and IMF\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Education cuts hurt disadvantaged children \u2013 Crowe Speaking as he attended the three national teachers\u2019unions conferences, Sinn F\u00e9in Spokesperson on Education Se\u00e1n Crowe has hit out at Minister Ruair\u00ed Quinn\u2019s refusal to reverse the cuts that have been a millstone around the neck of the education system.
