{"id":2821,"date":"2016-09-07T16:07:54","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T16:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=2821"},"modified":"2016-09-07T16:07:54","modified_gmt":"2016-09-07T16:07:54","slug":"crowe-hits-out-at-government-for-appealing-apple-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-hits-out-at-government-for-appealing-apple-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowe hits out at Government for appealing Apple ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dublin South West Sinn F\u00e9in TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has hit out at the Government for appealing the European Commission\u2019s ruling that Apple received illegal state aid from the Irish Government.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling, which the Government with the support of Fianna F\u00e1il and Labour will appeal, directed Apple to re-pay the Irish Government \u20ac13 billion plus interest.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in the D\u00e1il during today\u2019s debate, Deputy Crowe said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe majority of Irish tax paying citizens are absolutely fuming as they look on with disbelief at the Government\u2019s antics and its ludicrous proposal to appeal a finding that could mean billions of Euros to the Irish exchequer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParts of my constituency are some of the most deprived areas in this State. If a fraction of this tax take was invested into these disadvantaged communities, it would have a life changing affect for many children and their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis disgraceful decision is being cloaked in words like the national interest or that it is somehow defending our reputation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like it was supposedly in our national and reputational interest to shift billions of private banking and speculator debts onto the shoulders of Irish taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFianna F\u00e1il, Labour, and Fine Gael, were unable or unwilling to stand up to the EU elites when Irish citizens were saddled with billions in banking debt. They refuse to stand up to the EU on water charges. They stood with the EU elites on crippling austerity measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut now, by some miracle cure, they have found their voice and are proposing to take the European Commission to court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot to protect homeowners from mortgage distress, not to protect our right to water, and certainly not to protect our right to retrospective bank recapitalisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, they are standing up to Europe in defence of hugely profitable multinational corporations that are not paying their fair share of taxes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Deputy Crowe continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cApple representatives, under oath, have themselves testified to a US Senate subcommittee that since the early 1990s, the Irish government calculated Apple\u2019s taxable income in such a way as to produce an effective tax rate in the low single digits, which from 2003 has been 2% or less.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile many are trying to muddy the waters, this is simply about our tax structure and tax justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine Gael, Labour and Fianna F\u00e1il need to drop their sham outrage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIreland needs to recover the money that is owed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are to learn anything from this European Commission finding, it is that we need to set about creating a more transparent, fair and prosperous national and international tax system.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>ENDS<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dublin South West Sinn F\u00e9in TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has hit out at the Government for appealing the European Commission\u2019s ruling that Apple received illegal state aid from the Irish Government.
