Dublin South West Sinn F\u00e9in TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has welcomed the drafting of new a Bill that will tackle ticket rip off chancers who charge outrageous prices for\u00a0tickets to\u00a0entertainment and sport events in Ireland.<\/p>\n
Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ongoing problem of ticket touting was highlighted this week after tickets for the Electric Picnic music event sold out within minutes, but appeared immediately after on\u00a0ticket reselling sites for huge additional prices.<\/p>\n
\u201cWeekend camping tickets for\u00a0Electric Picnic,\u00a0went on sale this week at a price of \u20ac246.10 including charges literally on the\u00a0same\u00a0day,\u00a0tickets were reproduced and \u00a0widely available on reselling\u00a0sites at hugely inflated prices.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am informed that tickets on the\u00a0Seatwave\u00a0site, a Ticketmaster owned company, were selling for \u20ac474.98 for a weekend camping ticket, while the\u00a0same\u00a0tickets\u00a0were\u00a0 again selling on another site \u00a0for a whopping \u20ac542.36.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis opportunistic money grabbing bunch of chancers are preventing genuine concert goers and sporting enthusiasts the opportunity to attend events, and this needs to be tackled head on.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy party Sinn F\u00e9in want\u00a0to close this loophole with the\u00a0Sale of Tickets (Sporting and Cultural Events) Bill 2017,\u00a0which will begin to address this issue.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe legislation has two main objectives firstly\u00a0it will\u00a0protect the ordinary consumer who buys tickets in good faith, only to discover that they cannot attend the event. This\u00a0Bill would ensure that they will be able to dispose of their tickets legitimately, allowing up to a 10% profit margin.<\/p>\n
\u201cSecondly, it will act to stop those who purchase event tickets with the sole intention of reselling them at a profit. The Bill intends to dis-incentivise ticketing touting\u00a0by the introduction of substantial fines.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe the practice of consumers getting ripped off by a bunch of money grabbing chancers has continued long enough and this latest Electric Picnic case highlights the need for greater\u00a0regulation in this whole area to protect\u00a0Irish\u00a0public.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
