{"id":3828,"date":"2019-06-13T12:56:43","date_gmt":"2019-06-13T12:56:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=3828"},"modified":"2019-06-13T12:56:44","modified_gmt":"2019-06-13T12:56:44","slug":"crowe-welcomes-passage-of-tips-bill-in-the-seanad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-welcomes-passage-of-tips-bill-in-the-seanad\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowe welcomes passage of Tips Bill in the Seanad"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dublin South West TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has welcomed the agreement of the Seanad on legislation that would make it illegal for an employer to withhold, deduct, or demand the return of a tip from an employee without a lawful excuse, despite opposition from Fine Gael<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bill, introduced by Crowe\u2019s Sinn F\u00e9in colleague, Senator\nPaul Gavan, now heads to the D\u00e1il with cross-party support, and Sinn F\u00e9in are\npushing for the Bill to be enacted by Autumn of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crowe said that the proposed legislation would also require\nemployers to display their tipping policy in a suitable manner so that\ncustomers and workers have transparency in the distribution of their tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking after the passage of the Protection of Employee\nTips Bill, Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThis is a significant victory for workers, especially those in low pay and precarious employment.<\/p><p>\u201cDespite significant opposition and lobbying against the Bill by the Irish Hotels Federation and the Restaurants Association of Ireland, the Protection of Employee Tips Bill has now passed all stages in the Seanad. <\/p><p>\u201cThis Bill is a positive example of the fruits of cooperation when left leaning Oireachtas members work together and use their numbers to push through worker friendly legislation.<\/p><p>\u201cThe Bill will now move to the D\u00e1il and I am calling on the government to allow this proactive legislation through as quickly as possible. <\/p><p>\u201cThe sooner this legislation is enacted in law, the sooner workers will have a legal right to their tips and customers will have transparency in how their tips are actually distributed.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Crowe continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe must also give credit where credit is due \u2013 this Bill could never have made it this far without the tremendous support of the Irish Trade Union movement. <\/p><p>\u201cIn particular, I\u2019d like to congratulate the ONE Galway and ONE Cork movement, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, my trade union SIPTU, and the movement more broadly, who really got behind this Sinn F\u00e9in Bill and made it a reality.<\/p><p>\u201cThis issue is important, tips theft is widespread by many employers and the public are behind this Bill. People across this island believe tips should go directly to workers, and workers alone. <\/p><p>\u201cIt is a disgrace that this is not already the case, and we must right this wrong.
