{"id":3846,"date":"2019-06-28T10:19:40","date_gmt":"2019-06-28T10:19:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=3846"},"modified":"2019-06-28T10:20:55","modified_gmt":"2019-06-28T10:20:55","slug":"sean-crowe-td-calls-for-the-introduction-of-a-living-wage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/sean-crowe-td-calls-for-the-introduction-of-a-living-wage\/","title":{"rendered":"Se\u00e1n Crowe TD calls for the introduction of a Living Wage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dublin South West Sinn F\u00e9in TD,\nSe\u00e1n Crowe, has welcomed the launch of his party\u2019s proposals to introduce the\nLiving Wage in Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sinn F\u00e9in are pledging to\nintroduce a new Living Wage Act when in government, which will see workers earn\nenough which makes possible a minimum acceptable standard of living. The\nproposals also include an exemption for financially vulnerable businesses,\nwhich would protect businesses who cannot afford this transition at this stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThis is a very important policy as we recognise that many workers across the country earning the current minimum wage simply can\u2019t make ends meet.<\/p><p>\u201cWhile this Fine Gael-Fianna F\u00e1il government have rolled out the red carpet for vulture funds and big business, they have pulled up the drawbridge on ordinary workers who are really struggling.<\/p><p>\u201cSocial Justice Ireland estimates that there are 109,000 workers in Ireland, living in poverty. This is absolutely unacceptable.<\/p><p>\u201cIn government Sinn F\u00e9in will introduce the Living Wage, which currently stands at \u20ac11.90 per hour, which will see workers earn enough to make ends meet and bring an end to the practice of profitable businesses posting huge profits, while their employees are living hand to mouth.<\/p><p>\u201cSinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Living Wage policy will specifically benefit over 130,000 workers who currently earn the minimum wage.<\/p><p>\u201cWe believe every worker should get paid at least enough for their labour to be able to achieve a minimum acceptable standard of living. This is not too much to ask.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Crowe continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cOur proposal also includes an exemption for those financially vulnerable businesses who can show they genuinely cannot afford this transition to the Living Wage. <\/p><p>\u201cWe don\u2019t believe this clause will be used widely, as most SMEs value their workers and already pay their employees the living wage and much more.<\/p><p>\u201cHowever, this exemption safeguard businesses and jobs in those SMEs who find themselves in a difficult financial position.<\/p><p>\u201cThe Eurofound report from 2018 shows that implementing a living wage could play a significant role in offsetting the rise of in-work poverty across the European Union.<\/p><p>\u201cSinn F\u00e9in wants Ireland to become the first country in the world to introduce a Living Wage on a legislative basis.<\/p><p>&#8220;Proper wages and the eradication of precarious working practices must be the essential foundations of economic growth and productivity.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>ENDS<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dublin South West Sinn F\u00e9in TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has welcomed the launch of his party\u2019s proposals to introduce the Living Wage in Ireland.
