{"id":385,"date":"2012-04-15T18:18:16","date_gmt":"2012-04-15T18:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-welcomes-new-scholarship-scheme\/"},"modified":"2012-04-15T18:18:16","modified_gmt":"2012-04-15T18:18:16","slug":"crowe-welcomes-new-scholarship-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-welcomes-new-scholarship-scheme\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowe welcomes new scholarship scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\"><strong>Crowe welcomes new scholarship scheme <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Education Spokesperson Se\u00e1n  Crowe, TD, has welcomed this week\u2019s announcement of the establishment of  a new scholarship scheme for students attending higher education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">Deputy Crowe said: \u201cI welcome the  decision by the Department of Education and Skills who have announced  new arrangements that will mean 60 students from DEIS schools who hold  medical cards will receive \u20ac2,000 each September. This number  is\u00a0supposed to rise over the next three years\u00a0with 350 new students  benefiting from the scheme from 2015. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u201cThis announcement comes at a very  opportune time as it is getting increasingly difficult for students to  meet the costs of going on to a 3rd level Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">This scholarship scheme\u00a0is designed  to \u00a0help and give some additional\u00a0financial support to \u00a0young people  from disadvantaged backgrounds <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\"> The bursary awards will be awarded on a regional basis on the based\u00a0on an individual\u2019s Leaving CertIficate results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">\u201cThis type of initiative is in stark  contrast to the ongoing cuts that have been imposed on many DEIS and non  Deis\u00a0schools\u00a0 that are acting as barrier and\u00a0preventing many from  achieving their full\u00a0academic potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma; font-size: small;\"> \u201cThe release today of corresponding  results for Irish schools in OECD\u2019s 2009 Programme for International  Student Assessment tests clearly shows that, achievement differences  between school types in Ireland are related to the socio-economic  compositions of their student intakes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma; font-size: small;\">&#8220;The OECD report\u00a0also\u00a0highlights a  significant discrepancy in the reading scores of 15 year olds who are  attending Vocational schools and Private Fee paying schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma; font-size: small;\">&#8220;The extra supports from DEIS\u00a0and  other programmes are essential if we are to\u00a0bring a level of\u00a0\u00a0equality  of opportunity within\u00a0the current\u00a0education system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma; font-size: small;\"> &#8220;Funding which is currently available is barely enough to help\u00a0many of\u00a0these\u00a0disadvantaged\u00a0schools\u00a0\u00a0maintain an acceptable level of academic achievement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma; font-size: small;\">&#8220;Supports\u00a0like the School Scholarship  Scheme\u00a0\u00a0need to be increased\u00a0dramatically otherwise the current\u00a0two-tier  education system will become even more unbalanced.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crowe welcomes new scholarship scheme Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Education Spokesperson Se\u00e1n Crowe, TD, has welcomed this week\u2019s announcement of the establishment of a new scholarship scheme for students attending higher education.
