{"id":3915,"date":"2019-08-26T10:00:29","date_gmt":"2019-08-26T10:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=3915"},"modified":"2019-08-26T10:00:31","modified_gmt":"2019-08-26T10:00:31","slug":"sinn-fein-tds-call-on-government-to-help-save-markievicz-cottage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/sinn-fein-tds-call-on-government-to-help-save-markievicz-cottage\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinn F\u00e9in TDs call on government to help save Markievicz Cottage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\nSinn F\u00e9in TDs Se\u00e1n Crowe and Aengus \u00d3 Snodaigh have called on the \ngovernment and D\u00fan Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to intervene to \nsave, preserve, and possibly restore Countess Markievicz\u2019s summer \ncottage in Ticknock, County Dublin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cottage, just off the \nBlackglen Road, was originally owned by Constance Markievicz and her \nhusband Count Casimir Markievicz and it was used by them as a summer \nretreat. Countess Markievicz founded Fianna \u00c9ireann in 1909 and she also\n used the cottage for Fianna \u00c9ireann activities, such as camping and \ntrekking in the Dublin Mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of those who took part or \ndied in the 1916 Rising in Dublin, including some of the executed \nleaders, stayed in the house on occasion as part of a Fianna slua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crowe\n and \u00d3 Snodaigh recently visited the now overgrown and derelict granite \ncottage ruin in this picturesque part of the Dublin Mountains and they \nbelieve that the cottage should be saved and preserved it for future \ngenerations, considering the part it played in Ireland\u2019s revolutionary \npast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s spokesperson on Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht, Deputy Aengus \u00d3 Snodaigh, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cMinister  for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and local TD, Josepha Madigan,  should as part of her role as chair of the Decade of Centenaries  Committee show leadership and intervene to ensure the cottage doesn\u2019t  deteriorate further. The Minister should work with D\u00fan  Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to save and preserve Markievicz  Cottage, as part of local, national, and international history.<\/p><p>\u201cIt  should be declared a national monument, and working with the owner of  the site, it should be\u00a0cleared, a plaque erected initially, and then a  longer term plan of restoration for the granite cottage should be drawn  up. We should honour the role the cottage, the Countess, her husband,  and the members of Fianna \u00c9ireann played in Ireland\u2019s fight for  freedom.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dublin South West TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI grew  up in Rathfarnham listening to stories about Fianna \u00c9ireann and its  founder Countess Markievicz. She was a 1916 leader, the first woman  elected to Westminster and the D\u00e1il, and our first Minister for Labour,  and I was aware of her cottage in Ticknock.<\/p><p>\u201cThe state has  allowed this cottage, like the Moore Street site the last headquarters  of the 1916 Rebellion, go into disrepair and ruin. In the past no  protection was given to the Fianna \u00c9ireann headquarters on Camden Street  and it was demolished.<\/p><p>\u201cThis cottage is very much part of our  revolutionary history and Ireland\u2019s freedom struggle. It is unacceptable  and criminal that official neglect has allowed Markievicz\u2019s cottage to  disintegrate and collapse into ruins.<\/p><p>\u201cWe are calling on the  Government and D\u00fan Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council in this Decade of  Centenaries to do the right thing and to save and restore this national  monument. Every effort should be made to preserved it for the local  community and future generations.
