{"id":3973,"date":"2019-10-31T15:50:30","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T15:50:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=3973"},"modified":"2019-10-31T15:50:31","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T15:50:31","slug":"boil-water-controversy-raises-serious-questions-over-responsibility-and-lack-of-action-crowe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/boil-water-controversy-raises-serious-questions-over-responsibility-and-lack-of-action-crowe\/","title":{"rendered":"Boil water controversy raises serious questions over responsibility and lack of action &#8211; Crowe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dublin South West TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has said the boil water\ncontroversy that affected over 600,000 people continues to raise serious\nquestions about its cause, and Irish Water and Fingal County Council\u2019s\nresponsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sinn F\u00e9in TD was responding to the Environmental\nProtection Agency\u2019s (EPA\u2019s) Drinking Water October Audit report on the Leixlip\nplant, which was the source of the controversy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boil water notice impacted on the biggest amount of\npeople in the State and basic recommendations from earlier difficulties don\u2019t\nappear to have been carried out by Irish Water and Fingal County Council. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAccording to the latest EPA audit on the Leixlip plant, conducted after the Boil Water notice was issued, the primary cause of the failure at the plant was a silt blockage in one of the treatment processes.<\/p><p>\u201cThe failure of Irish Water and Fingal County Council to implement the recommendations of a previous EPA audit in the plant is supposedly a contributory factor in the latest failure in the plant.\u00a0 This raises serious questions about the overall audit process and the failure to comply with its recommendations.<\/p><p>\u201cThe big question following this report is around who is responsible for this failure, is it Irish Water or Fingal County Council or both?<\/p><p>\u201cOr was this unprecedented boil water notice down to the simple failure to implement the recommendations due to a lack of funding and resources or just down to neglect.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Crowe continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThere are also serious questions to answer regarding how the boil water notice was communicated, because it left many people in the dark and unsure if their homes were affected.<\/p><p>\u201cThe boil notice was issued late on a Tuesday evening. News reports were telling people to go to Irish Water\u2019s website for information, but the website clearly crashed and was then off line for the night.<\/p><p>\u201cWe were informed\u00a0that parts of South Dublin County Council were included in the boil water notice but that limited information was useless as it was very hard to find out what specific areas it related to.<\/p><p>\u201cIrish Water must learn lessons from this incident and improve how it communicates with citizens potentially affected by\u00a0their boil water notices.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>ENDS&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dublin South West TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has said the boil water controversy that affected over 600,000 people continues to raise serious questions about its cause, and Irish Water and Fingal County Council\u2019s responsibility.
