Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s spokesperson on Foreign\nAffairs, Se\u00e1n Crowe TD, has sharply criticised the US government after it\nannounced that it would no longer consider Israel\u2019s illegal colonial\nsettlements in occupied Palestine as \u2018inconsistent\u2019 with international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cInternational law is extremely clear on this issue. Israel\u2019s colonial settlements in occupied Palestine are illegal under international law. There is no legal nuance on this, they are in clear contravention of international law.<\/p>
\u201cIsrael has illegally built thousands of these colonial settlements on stolen Palestinian land and over 600,000 illegal colonial settlers live in them. This violates the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits an occupying power from transferring its population to the area it occupies.<\/p>
\u201cThis US change of position will have a destabilising effect on the region, it is dangerous and morally and legally wrong. <\/p>
\u201cThe Irish government needs to robustly challenge the US government\u2019s support for Israel\u2019s repeated violations of international law and Israel\u2019s apartheid regime in Palestine. <\/p>
\u201cI believe the Irish government must now respond by abiding by the\u00a0D\u00e1il motion that called on the Irish government to formally\u00a0recognise the State of Palestine, which was unanimously passed in 2014.<\/p>
\u201cI believe the T\u00e1naiste, Simon Coveney, should also end the government\u2019s opposition to the Occupied Territories Bill, which would make trade with illegal settlements a criminal offence in Ireland. He must work with all the other parties in the D\u00e1il who support the Bill to ensure it is urgently passed and made law. <\/p>
\u201cThis would send a strong message to the US and Israeli governments that Ireland will not ignore the illegality of Israel\u2019s colonial settlements in Palestine and the suffering of the Palestinian people under Israel\u2019s apartheid regime.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
