{"id":4030,"date":"2020-01-09T12:28:23","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T12:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=4030"},"modified":"2020-01-09T12:28:24","modified_gmt":"2020-01-09T12:28:24","slug":"sinn-fein-bill-to-stop-pension-age-increase-to-67-years-to-come-before-the-dail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/sinn-fein-bill-to-stop-pension-age-increase-to-67-years-to-come-before-the-dail\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinn F\u00e9in Bill to stop pension age increase to 67 years to come before the D\u00e1il"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dublin South West Sinn F\u00e9in TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has said that his party\u2019s Bill to stop upcoming pension\nage increases will be debated in the D\u00e1il in the coming weeks.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\nDeputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cFine Gael are planning to increase the pension age to 67 years in January 2021 and further again to 68 years in 2028. This means that today&#8217;s workers, and especially those approaching retirement, may not be able to access their State Pension at 66 years, which is the situation currently.<\/p><p>\u201cThese increases will see Ireland have one of the highest pension ages in the world. <br> \u00a0<br> \u201cAt the moment, those obliged by contract to retire at 65 years are forced on to a jobseekers payment for one year before accessing their State Pension at 66 years. <\/p><p>\u201cThis has caused huge upset as many of these aging workers, having worked all their lives and never before claimed the dole. Yet now, through no fault of their own, they have to sign on for one year.<\/p><p>\u201cFrom next year, retirees will be forced on to a jobseekers payment for two years. This is a ridiculous and unacceptable situation for people who have worked hard and paid their taxes, in some cases, for a lifetime.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Crowe continued:<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThis will see Ireland have a pension age that is well ahead of the majority of our EU counterparts and England do not plan to move their pension age to 68 years until 2046, eighteen years after Ireland.<\/p><p>\u201cThese unacceptable pension age increases have their genesis in previous Fine Gael and Fianna F\u00e1il governments which granted Ministers massive pensions of over \u20ac100,000 that they were able to access once they left office and well before the 67 year old cut off point they are now proposing. <br> \u00a0<br> \u201cSinn F\u00e9in have consistently called on the Government to suspend these pension age increases. They were agreed behind closed doors without any debate or vote and therefore, they should not go ahead.<br> \u00a0<br> \u201cOur Bill calling on the Government to establish a Pension Age Task Force will look at pension age and make recommendations based on evidence rather than cost saving measures. This Bill will be debated in the D\u00e1il in the coming weeks.<br> \u00a0<br> \u201cNobody due to retire at 65 years of age should be forced on to a jobseekers payment.
