{"id":4044,"date":"2020-01-16T14:49:54","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T14:49:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=4044"},"modified":"2020-01-16T14:49:55","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T14:49:55","slug":"crowe-supports-school-secretaries-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-supports-school-secretaries-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowe supports school secretaries campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sinn F\u00e9in candidate\nfor Dublin South West, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has reiterated his support for school\nsecretaries in their \u2018Support Our Secretaries\u2019 campaign for fair treatment,\nrespect and improved working conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cSchool secretaries are invaluable members of our schools and our communities, often working above and beyond their job requirements.<\/p><p>\u201cThey work on the front line and are the first port of call for parents and students. Without them, our schools would simply not function.<\/p><p>\u201cI want to reiterate that their industrial action and campaign for respect and fair conditions for all school secretaries has the full support of myself and Sinn F\u00e9in.<\/p><p>\u201cAt its heart, this dispute centres on the fact that the majority of school secretaries, over three thousand, earn as little as \u20ac13,000 a year with irregular, short-term contracts and no pay during summer holidays or school breaks.<\/p><p>\u201cThis is compounded by the inequality that persists between them and the few hundred school secretaries who are paid directly by the Department of Education with starting salaries of \u20ac24,000.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Crowe continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cMinister Joe McHugh was made aware of their job insecurity and this two-tier pay structure in May of last year and has dragged his heels in reaching an agreement.<\/p><p>\u201cThe Minister will claim that specific responsibility for the pay and conditions of these workers rests with schools through the capitation grants they receive, and not his Department.<\/p><p>\u201cAs the Government knows well, schools rely on the capitation grant to cover running costs such as heating, lighting, insurance costs, and teaching materials.<\/p><p>\u201cSecretaries have low pay, no holiday pay, no sick pay, no real job security, certainly no occupational pensions, and no access to public service salary scales. A Sinn F\u00e9in government will end this unfair system.<\/p><p>\u201cThe public service should be a leader in providing fair pay and conditions for employees, but school secretaries have clearly been left far behind when it comes to pay and\u00a0working conditions\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>ENDS<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sinn F\u00e9in candidate for Dublin South West, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has reiterated his support for school secretaries in their \u2018Support Our Secretaries\u2019 campaign for fair treatment, respect and improved working conditions.
