{"id":424,"date":"2012-06-29T09:56:38","date_gmt":"2012-06-29T09:56:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/survivors-of-abuse-need-to-be-informed-of-statutory-fund-bill\/"},"modified":"2012-06-29T09:56:38","modified_gmt":"2012-06-29T09:56:38","slug":"survivors-of-abuse-need-to-be-informed-of-statutory-fund-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/survivors-of-abuse-need-to-be-informed-of-statutory-fund-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Survivors of abuse need to be informed of Statutory Fund Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\"><strong>Survivors of abuse need to be informed of Statutory Fund Bill<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Education Spokesperson Se\u00e1n Crowe has expressed his disappointment that a database of survivors who received recompense under the Redress Board cannot be used provide information of the existence of the Residential Statutory Fund Bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Deputy Crowe was speaking after raising the matter with Minister Quinn during D\u00e1il Questions on Thursday. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u201cWhen I have spoken with the survivors of residential abuse, a common complaint has been that their views and what they want from the redress process have been consistently ignored.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u201cMany feel they have been left side-lined from the process and disenfranchised from having a serious input into how they are compensated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u201cThere have been serious difficulties in communicating to survivors their entitlements under the Redress Board, particularly for those people who live abroad and have little contact with Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u201cWhen I met recently with the Munster Survivors\u2019 Support Services they made the very sensible suggestion that the Department\u2019s database of survivors who had applied to the Redress Board be used as a way of directly communicating information relating to the Residential Institutions Statutory Fund. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u201cThis would open a direct line of communication between the Department and a significant percentage of people who suffered in Residential Institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u201cThe Minister stated this was not possible under the existing confidentiality arrangements and problems with sending unsolicited letters to survivors of abuse who applied for redress.
