{"id":435,"date":"2012-07-16T09:02:11","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T09:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/child-carer-figures-shocking-crowe\/"},"modified":"2012-07-16T09:02:11","modified_gmt":"2012-07-16T09:02:11","slug":"child-carer-figures-shocking-crowe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/child-carer-figures-shocking-crowe\/","title":{"rendered":"Child carer figures shocking \u2013 Crowe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Child carer figures\u00a0shocking \u2013 Crowe<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Local Sinn Fein TD Se\u00e1n Crowe has described as \u201cshocking\u201d census  figures that\u00a0confirmed that over 4,200 children provide\u00a0care to &#8220;a loved  one&#8221; or elderly neighbour\u00a0in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>The Tallaght based Deputy was commenting on the findings from a  dedicated question on young carers that was included in the 2011Central  Statistics Office (CSO) census figures for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0less than two weeks\u00a0the National Carers\u2019 Strategy\u00a0is due to\u00a0be  published and\u00a0Deputy Crowe\u00a0hopes\u00a0it\u00a0will for the first time\u00a0urgently  address the needs of young carers.<\/p>\n<p>He said;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese\u00a0Census figures confirm what the Carers Association, the  Children\u2019s Charity Barnardos and other groups have been saying for years  but are still shocking and hard to accept.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Census\u00a0questionnaire shows that 4,228 children provided unpaid  care in April 2011, with 1,838 under the age of 10. Most children are  providing care for up to two hours a day, but for 500 others\u00a0the number  of hours\u00a0is even higher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese figures are shocking and need a measured\u00a0proactive response from government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn two weeks time, the National Carers\u2019 Strategy will be published  and it needs to urgently address the needs of young carers in its  report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA child aged eight or nine is emotionally ill-equipped to provide  essential care for an adult and policy makers and society should not\u00a0be  placing children\u00a0in such a position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the very least, there needs to be practical supports for children  who provide this type of service yet in contrast to other countries  there is no dedicated service available in Ireland to provide  emotional\u00a0assistance and support for\u00a0these children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe latest census figures also reveal that there are\u00a0595,335 people  with a disability\u00a0accounting for 13 per cent of the population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe total number of carers aged 15 and over increased by 21,967\u00a0to 182,884.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In addition there were a staggering\u00a04,228 carers under the age of 15  bringing the total number of carers to 187,112, or 4.1 per cent of the  population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarers are saving the state \u20ac4bn every year but their work and the  commitment they have shown to loved ones have been largely ignored by  policy makers and successive governments.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Child carer figures\u00a0shocking \u2013 Crowe Local Sinn Fein TD Se\u00e1n Crowe has described as \u201cshocking\u201d census figures that\u00a0confirmed that over 4,200 children provide\u00a0care to &#8220;a loved one&#8221; or elderly neighbour\u00a0in Ireland.
