Government Undermining\u00a0Local Democracy \u2013 Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dublin Southwest\u00a0Sinn F\u00e9in TD Se\u00e1n Crowe, has said that Local Government Minister Phil Hogan is \u201cundermining local democracy\u201d by imposing further cuts in funding for councils, and linking these cuts to the Household Charge.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Tallaght based TD said it was inevitable that this would negatively\u00a0impact on frontline\u00a0 Council Services will be significant and far reaching<\/p>\n

Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMinister Hogan and his colleagues in the Fine Gael\/Labour Coalition are mounting an assault on local democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBy tying Local Government funding to the uncollectable and inequitable Household Charge the Coalition is putting councils in an almost\u00a0impossible financial position. He is now going to impose further cuts in central government allocations for Councils for the remainder of 2012. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn\u00a0South Dublin County\u00a0the Council\u2019s allocation has been reduced by \u20ac1,900,842 reflecting an adjustment based on the level of compliance achieved to date which is supposedly running at\u00a057% of the total. \u00a0This \u00a0financial reduction reflects an 11.8% cut of the overall allocation of \u20ac16,963,904 and its expected that the impact on the delivery of frontline\u00a0services will be significant and far reaching.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the time of Budget 2012 Sinn F\u00e9in said\u00a0 that the cut to the Local Government Fund was unsustainable and \u00a0that the Household Charge was unjust and would be widely boycotted by householders.\u00a0\u00a0 By making local government over reliant and dependent on receipts from the Household Charge it\u00a0was inevitable that this\u00a0 was going to negatively impact\u00a0and \u00a0undermine\u00a0 frontline services right\u00a0across\u00a0Council\u00a0Departments. <\/span><\/p>\n

“Unfortunately this is\u00a0 what\u00a0appears to be\u00a0happening now\u00a0and it is citizens in Dublin and across this State who are paying the high price for the\u00a0Governments dogged pursuit of\u00a0their failed policies of austerity. <\/span><\/p>\n

“Minister\u00a0Hogan and his Government colleagues need to support and enhance\u00a0local government services during this recession not undermine local democracy.”<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
