Sinn F\u00e9in TD for Dublin South West Se\u00e1n Crowe has called on the government to finally commit funding to secure the future of the post office network.<\/p>\n
Teachta Crowe said:<\/p>\n
\u201cLast year, the Irish Postmasters\u2019 Union commissioned a report that recommended a Public Service Obligation (PSO) be introduced to secure the future of the network and allow post offices to continue to provide excellent services, which are particularly important in rural Ireland.<\/p>\n
\u201cSinn F\u00e9in fully support this call. In fact, we have been advocating for a PSO to secure the future of the network for over a decade now.<\/p>\n
\u201cPost offices provide a crucial service and, with two major banks now closing hundreds more branches, people across the state will become even more reliant on their local post office.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe 2016 Kerr Report made a number of important recommendations in relation to the future viability of the post office network, including increasing the financial and government services available.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn addition, An Post\u2019s \u2018Green Hub\u2019, a one-stop shop for people looking to access energy efficiency grants and funding, has potential for growth in local post offices.<\/p>\n
“While additional banking services are on the horizon, they will not be enough on their own.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Irish Postmasters\u2019 Union say that the day of reckoning has arrived for the Post Office Network, and if funding is not provided before the summer, significant closures will soon follow.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring a debate on a Sinn F\u00e9in motion on post offices in 2018, Fianna F\u00e1il called for a PSO to be introduced.<\/p>\n
