Crowe Commends Guidance Work\u00a0 in Results Week

Speaking in advance of the release of this year\u2019s Leaving Certificate results for 2012, which are due out on Thursday, 17 August, Sinn F\u00e9in Education Spokesperson Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0 commended the National Parents\u2019 Council for providing a National Helpline for students and\u00a0their\u00a0parents<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Describing the helpline as an \u201cessential service that\u00a0will be\u00a0of great help during what is often a stressful and difficult time for students an their parents\u201d Deputy Crowe also paid tribute to the work of School Guidance Councillor in providing vital support and advice to Leaving Certificate Students, their Parents or Guardians. <\/span><\/div>\n
Deputy Crowe said: \u201cThe Leaving Cert\u00a0Guidance\u00a0Helpline phone number\u00a0can be contacted at\u00a01800265165 and it is run courtesy of the National Parents Council in association with\u00a0sponsors like\u00a0the Irish Independent, Eircom, the Department of Education and Skills and\u00a0also has the \u00a0the support of the Institute of Guidance Cntireounsellors . <\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThe Helpline\u00a0is operated over the\u00a0eperiod that the Leaving Certificate results\u00a0being issued, \u00a0to the release of the first round CAO offers. It gives students and parents an opportunity to access basic information on points accrued in the exam, changes to course application, exam result recheck , and a lot of additional course\u00a0information is provided by fully qualified staff.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span>\u201cSchool Guidance Counsellors\u00a0should\u00a0 be commended for the vital service they provide\u00a0over the\u00a0entire stressful period\u00a0of the Leaving Cert and the actual\u00a0results being released.\u00a0 Throughout the school year they offer a wide range of professional counselling services to students. It is a service that represents exceptional value for money and supports students who might otherwise have to wait for up to two years before being seen by outside Agencies.

\u201cThe 2011 Budget removed the ex-quota Guidance counselling\u00a0\u00a0allocation to schools, meaningin reality that\u00a0the service has been greatly reduced andcurtailed. The\u00a0 cuts in Counsellors came\u00a0 at a time of rising rates of suicide and increasing mental health problems in young people who\u00a0statistic show\u00a0benefi greatly t from this\u00a0one to one support.

\u201cIn addition to Paastoral guidance, School Counsellors also\u00a0give essential advice on a wide range of career options, allowing many\u00a0students to make more\u00a0informed choices about their future career paths. <\/span><\/div>\n

.Many Irish Educators feel that\u00a0without appropriate guidance and information ,the numbers of students making wrong choices and dropping out of College will increase, at a huge cost to the individual and to\u00a0the states education system.<\/span><\/div>\n
