Sinn F\u00e9in TD for Dublin South West Sean Crowe has called on the Government to give workers the choice to retire or continue working at the age of 65 and to ensure that the state pension protects our workers and family carers when they reach retirement.
Teachta Crowe said:
\u201cThe Government parties went into the 2020 general election with a plan to increase the retirement age once they took power. It became one of the biggest issues of the campaign and the voters made it known that they did not support any further rises to the pension age.
\u201cSinn F\u00e9in is the only party that has always been clear and unequivocal on this issue; everyone should have the right to retire on a state pension at 65 if they choose. Workers deserve dignity in retirement.
\u201cThat is not to say all workers want to take that opportunity to retire, others want to remain at work where they are able and willing to do so.
\u201cThese workers should be allowed to stay working if they feel they are able and the mandatory retirement age should be abolished to give workers the choice to work or retire as they so wish.
\u201cAfter a lifetime of work, people should be able to choose between retiring at 65 on their state pension rate or continuing to work.
\u201cThe government must ensure the future of the state pension is one which protects our workers and family carers when they reach retirement.\u201d
