Dublin South West TD Se\u00e1n Crowe has said he has\u00a0written to the Health Minister James O Reilly seeking assurances that an important Counselling post within the existening Youth Drugs and Alcohol Service (YoDA) in Tallaght will\u00a0\u00a0not be the victim of cuts and\u00a0 that key posts\u00a0will be maintained by the Health Service Executive (HSE).<\/span><\/div>\n

Deputy Crowe was responding to\u00a0proposals by the\u00a0 Health Service Executive\u00a0 not to fill\u00a0a\u00a0 Youth Counselling\u00a0job vacancy,\u00a0 which he said would have a serious impact on\u00a0young people who have substance abuse problems..<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to the HSE\u2019s own website, YoDA ensures that appropriate services and treatment are provided to young people with substance abuse problems and aims to reduce the harm caused to minors by their drug or alcohol use.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA UNICEF Ireland report published in 2011 showed\u00a0 widespread drug and alcohol consumption among young people and the\u00a0pivotal\u00a0 role these substances play in their lives. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCommunities like Tallaght have been hugely affected and \u00a0many families and their\u00a0 neighbourhoods\u00a0have paid a heavy price for the\u00a0widespread\u00a0availability of illegal drugs\u00a0like\u00a0Benzodiazepines, Cocaine and Heroin.<\/span><\/div>\n

“We know that the proliferation of\u00a0drugs, the crisis and its fall out is effecting every town and village in Ireland. <\/span><\/div>\n
It is a very\u00a0lucky family that has not been effected by this growing crisis.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Minister for Health James O Reilly\u00a0has to\u00a0wake up \u00a0to the realisation that it is \u00a0vitally\u00a0important that the very limited resources that are currently in place, to deal with this complex issue\u00a0including\u00a0 youth addiction,\u00a0are if not enhanced at least maintained at their current levels.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThere are huge\u00a0concerns in Tallaght\u00a0that a Yo DA Counsellor who resigned earlier this year will not be replaced by the HSE in a move that would have serious implications for adolescents living in this particular\u00a0area.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“The danger is that if this is allowed to\u00a0happen\u00a0in a area like Tallaght, then it will be replicated in other areas that have an addiction challenge.<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cClearly, in these difficult economic times, young people are facing enormous challenges and those who succumb to alcohol or drugs abuse need\u00a0support and encouragement,\u00a0otherwise they face a very bleak future.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have asked the Health Minister James Reilly to clarify matters and offer assurances that posts like this will be filled immediately. <\/span><\/div>\n

“We need to see greater evidence that the Minister and his\u00a0Government. see\u00a0the tens of thousands of young people living\u00a0\u00a0with addiction as\u00a0a\u00a0priority\u00a0and that frontline Counselling services will be maintained.\u00a0\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
