{"id":500,"date":"2012-09-13T09:14:30","date_gmt":"2012-09-13T09:14:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/oecd-expose-education-weakness\/"},"modified":"2012-09-13T09:14:30","modified_gmt":"2012-09-13T09:14:30","slug":"oecd-expose-education-weakness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/oecd-expose-education-weakness\/","title":{"rendered":"OECD  Expose Education Weakness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #2f2f2f; font-size: large;\"><strong>OECD\u00a0 Expose Education Weakness <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #2f2f2f; font-size: small;\"><strong>Sinn F\u00e9in Education Spokesperson Se\u00e1n Crowe TD has described as \u201cextremely worrying\u201d the findings from an OECD (Organisation and Economic Co-operate Development) think-tank which suggests that not enough time is being spent teaching science based subjects in Irish primary school pupils.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #2f2f2f; font-size: small;\">The OECD &#8216;Education at a Glance&#8217; report reveals that only 4% of classroom time is\u00a0 actually devoted to science, a figure that is half the international average and contrasts with the time spent teaching\u00a0a subject like\u00a0religion which stands at 10%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #2f2f2f; font-size: small;\">Deputy Se\u00e1n\u00a0Crowe said: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #2f2f2f; font-size: small;\">\u201cDespite Ireland being in the grip of a recession, the science and IT based industries continues to flourish to the extent that Irish based firms are having to recruit abroad for personnel who can fulfil specialised roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #2f2f2f; font-size: small;\">\u201cIt is\u00a0extremely worrying that this report\u2019s findings show Ireland lagging way\u00a0behind other OECD countries in the amount of time allocated in primary school to the teaching of science based subjects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #2f2f2f; font-size: small;\">\u201cThe current figure of 4% is half the OECD average and this places our future workforce at a considerable disadvantage. In addition to this, our education system is ill-equipped to produce graduates who are multi-lingual, another significant impediment to finding employment in a global workforce. These are key issues Education Minister Ruair\u00ed Quinn must prioritise and address as part of any reform of science based subjects are taught at school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #2f2f2f; font-size: small;\">\u201cChildren who are  taught science at a young age are better able to understand and prosper at the  subject\u00a0in\u00a0later life. The findings of this report must be\u00a0scrutinised and\u00a0actioned on.\u00a0The  report\u00a0highlights a weakness a glaring weakness in the current system.  There\u00a0needs to be far greater priority \u00a0given to the teaching of science based subjects which must be done in tandem with how maths and languages are taught.
