{"id":502,"date":"2012-09-14T08:52:07","date_gmt":"2012-09-14T08:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-meets-barnardo-reps-on-school-costs\/"},"modified":"2012-09-14T08:52:07","modified_gmt":"2012-09-14T08:52:07","slug":"crowe-meets-barnardo-reps-on-school-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-meets-barnardo-reps-on-school-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowe Meets  Barnardo Reps On School Costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> Crowe Meets\u00a0 Barnardo Reps\u00a0On School Costs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Dublin South West\u00a0 TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe, TD, met  this week in Leinst er Houseare\u00a0\u00a0with June Tinsley, the Policy Development Manager at Barnardos and Catherine Joyce, the  organisation\u2019s Advocacy Manager to discuss difficulties that parents are currently  experiencing in relation to sending their children to school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Describing the meeting as &#8221;\u00a0a frank exchange of ideas and very worthwhile\u201d, Deputy\u00a0Crowe commended the important work being\u00a0carried out by Barnardos in support of vulnerable children and their families. The meeting discussed a number of issues\u00a0 including the implementation of school book lending schemes and the rising cost of\u00a0cost school uniforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Deputy\u00a0Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0said: \u201cSinn F\u00e9in supports the efforts of groups\u00a0 like\u00a0Barnardos who are campaigning for the expansion of the school book lending scheme and a\u00a0more affordable system of\u00a0school uniforms to be made available to students and cash strapped parents. These are issues Sinn F\u00e9in has\u00a0also highlighted\u00a0and it is vitally importany  that the\u00a0Education Minister Ruair\u00ed Quinn does all within his power to implement realistic measures that can alleviate the financial burden on parents when equipping their children for school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cThe annual cost of school books in this State\u00a0is \u20ac60 million, an unacceptable figure that places far too great a burden on families, particularly\u00a0 during\u00a0the current economic climate.Minister Quinn needs \u00a0to ensure that\u00a0the publishers of school books honour their commitments and implement a more ethical code of practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201c Hard pressed parents want to\u00a0see\u00a0a  greater\u00a0roll out of book\u00a0lending schemes and\u00a0 the yearly rising cost of  school uniforms\u00a0drastically reduced. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">An  active\u00a0campaign needs to\u00a0gain momemtum around these issues and should  involve politicians, stakeholders, parents and\u00a0other representative  groups like Barnardos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A greater roll out of book lending schemes at Primary and Secondary  level must become\u00a0the norm in schools throughout the State.
