Crowe calls for the release of the Cuban Five<\/span><\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Dublin South West TD Se\u00e1n Crowe has called for the release of the group known as the\u00a0‘Cuban Five’. The Cubans, Gerardo Hernandez, Ram\u00f3n Laba\u00f1ino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Ren\u00e9 Gonzalez, were arrested in Miami 14 years ago this month.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deputy Crowe this week met\u00a0Magali Llort, mother of Fernando Gonzalez, and Dr. Haymel Espinosa, who is the daughter of the co-pilot of the civilian Cubano plane which exploded after a bomb on board exploded in Barbados in 1967.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the meeting Deputy Crowe said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOn this the 14th<\/sup> year anniversary of the imprisonment of the Cuban Five, I\u00a0would like to be associated with the\u00a0calls for the release of these men.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMagali Llort and Dr. Haymel Espinosa spoke in-depth about the case and subsequent trial of the Five, and it seems quite evident that these men did not get a fair and independent trial. Additionally some of the families of the five\u00a0men say they\u00a0have\u00a0never received visas\u00a0to see their loved ones, and those who have face enormous barriers in obtaining them. I support them in their quest to find justice for their family members.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMajor human right organisations such as Amnesty International and the UN Human Rights Council share concerns that the men have not received a fair trial and throughout their detention they have had their human rights violated.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the men\u00a0Ren\u00e9 Gonzalez has now\u00a0been released.\u00a0He is being forced to stay and remain in Florida for three years on probation\u00a0despite the\u00a0real and daily\u00a0threat to his life; he should be allowed return to his family in Cuba. <\/span><\/p>\n

In the interest of fairness\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0other prisoners who pose no threat should also be released from jail and allowed\u00a0 return to their families and loved ones in\u00a0Cuba. <\/span><\/p>\n

Note: There is a public meeting organised by the Free the Cuban Five Campaign in Connolly Room, Liberty Hall at 6.30pm Wednesday 19th<\/sup> September, at which Magali Llort and Dr. Haymel Espinosa will speak. All concerned people should attend.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
