Crowe supports ban on illegal settlement products<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Dublin South West TD Se\u00e1n Crowe today met with the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI)\u00a0at the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade. The EAPPI representatives called on the Irish Government to ban the importation of goods that originate in illegal Israeli settlements.<\/p>\n

EAPPI provide protective presence to vulnerable communities, monitor and report on human rights abuses and support Palestinians and Israelis working together for peace.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the meeting Deputy Se\u00e1n\u00a0Crowe, the Sinn F\u00e9in spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Trade and Diaspora, said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Foreign Affairs Committee\u00a0had a very open and frank discussion with\u00a0members of EAPPI today. The\u00a0representatives talked about their experiences and work in the occupied Palestinian territories, and it was disturbing to hear the nature\u00a0of the intensification of Israel\u2019s settlements on Palestinian lands and the widespread destruction of Palestinian homes, schools and infrastructure across the occupied territories.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe settlement\u00a0policies of the Israeli government amount to the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people from their lands, and they are massively hindering genuine attempts\u00a0at creating a peaceful solution\u00a0to the conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EAPPI requested that the Irish Government and the European Union introduce a\u00a0ban on the importation of goods which originate from illegal Israeli settlements\u00a0within\u00a0Palestine\u2019s borders. This ban would not be on goods originating from the State of Israel, but on products coming from these illegal settlements.<\/p>\n

“I\u00a0believe this ban would help stop the spread of illegal settlements and I\u00a0support the\u00a0EAPPI\u2019s call\u00a0for the Irish\u00a0Government to ban these goods. \u00a0I am also calling on the Government to use its role as the President of the EU Council, at the beginning of 2013, to encourage other EU states to adopt a ban on these goods.<\/p>\n

\u201cI recall taking part in pickets outside Dunne\u2019s Stores\u00a0in the 1980’s to protest against the sale of apartheid goods from South Africa. Those small but significant\u00a0Dublin solidarity pickets inspired many who were oppressed and sent a clear message around the world\u00a0that Irish\u00a0people were opposed to\u00a0the apartheid\u00a0system.<\/p>\n

“Ireland needs to stand up for what is right and oppose the system of ethnic cleansing that is being carried out\u00a0against Palestinian people.\u00a0By banning these goods Ireland will be on the side of\u00a0progress, and like the Dunne\u2019s Stores strike, it will\u00a0give real\u00a0hope to those working to create the\u00a0conditions for a peaceful solution to conflict in that region.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
