The  Dublin\u00a0South West TD\u00a0also called on them to\u00a0make a commitment to child  proof December\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy\u00a0Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublication of the proposed wording  for the Children\u2019s Referendum is\u00a0 a significant step towards enshrining  children\u2019s rights in the\u00a0Irish\u00a0Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever the reality  of life for many children in this State is a world away from the  aspirations in the proposed Constitutional Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver 100,000\u00a0Irish children live in poverty. This number has  increased in recent years as a result of the austerity policies of this  Government and its predecessors in Fianna F\u00e1il and the Green Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf  Labour and Fine Gael parties\u00a0are serious about making the best  interests of the child paramount then they need to produce a  realsitic\u00a0strategy to end child poverty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine Gael and Labour need to give a\u00a0 public commitment that there  will be no\u00a0unfair\u00a0measures in December&#8217;s Budget which will put an\u00a0added  burden on low and middle income\u00a0 families and\u00a0\u00a0force more children into  \u00a0poverty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren\u2019s charity Barnardos has warned that\u00a0greater cuts to Social  Welfare and public services will only\u00a0lead to further hardship and  greater incidences of poverty and deprivation for Irish children.<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThe Children\u2019s Referendum is welcome but fine &#8216;flowery&#8217;\u00a0words alone will not put food in the stomachs of\u00a0hungry children.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8221;\u00a0I am\u00a0calling\u00a0 on the Government to put its money  where its mouth is on child poverty and make a commitment to child proof  December&#8217;s Budget.\u201d<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Child Poverty-\u00a0Flowery Words won&#8217;t\u00a0tackle it\u00a0\u00a0says\u00a0Crowe \u00a0 Sinn F\u00e9in Deputy\u00a0Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0has welcomed the publication of proposed wording of the Constitutional Amendment on Children and called on the\u00a0Government to deliver a strategy to tackle increasing levels of child poverty.
