{"id":514,"date":"2012-09-21T10:48:21","date_gmt":"2012-09-21T10:48:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/shatter-needs-to-stop-spinning-on-garda-cuts\/"},"modified":"2012-09-21T10:48:21","modified_gmt":"2012-09-21T10:48:21","slug":"shatter-needs-to-stop-spinning-on-garda-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/shatter-needs-to-stop-spinning-on-garda-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Shatter needs to stop Spinning on Garda  cuts-"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Shatter needs to stop\u00a0Spinning on Garda \u00a0cuts-<\/h2>\n<div>Sinn  F\u00e9in&#8217;s Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0TD has called on Minister Alan Shatter to \u201cstop  spinning yarns and\u00a0passing the buck\u201d back\u00a0to the Garda Commissioner,  Martin Callinan and his officers over Garda\u00a0cuts and\u00a0closures.\u00a0Crowe  said \u00a0that the cuts are\u00a0damaging\u00a0 Garda\u00a0\u00a0morale and impacting directly  on communities.<br \/> He was speaking after hearing\u00a0from Minister Shatter\u00a0that station  closures and other cutbacks are \u201ca matter for the Garda Commissioner and  Senior Garda\u00ed\u201d.<\/div>\n<div>Deputy\u00a0Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0said:<\/div>\n<div>\u201cAcross  the State, the impact of Garda cutbacks is plain to see with Garda  stations closing,\u00a0Garda officers retiring in increasing  numbers\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0basic equipment like\u00a0Garda vehicles not being replaced.<br \/> \u201cYet every time\u00a0the Minister is challenged, he responds with catch  phrases like \u2018rationalisation\u2019 or \u2018smart policing\u2019. It isn\u2019t rational or  smart to sap the morale of Garda\u00ed at the front line. It isn\u2019t rational  or smart to fundamentally undermine the partnership between Garda\u00ed and  local communities\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an increasing dread acrossl Ireland about what cutbacks  are coming next. I understand that Minister Shatter will soon confirm  the closure of dozens more Garda stations across the State. That means  that more rural communities and some urban will be abandoned to \u2018smart  policing\u2019 from a long distance and lose that critically important  overt\u00a0presence on the ground\u201d.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe Garda Representative Association which represents frontline  officers in the State has appealed to the Government not to proceed with  these closures, revealing that keeping many of these stations open  costs around \u20ac3,000 per year. They have also revealed that since 2009,  560 vehicles have been removed from frontline units. <br \/> So from rank and file Garda, we are getting the truth and from the  Minister,we are getting\u00a0 more yarns and spin.
