{"id":526,"date":"2012-10-03T10:22:27","date_gmt":"2012-10-03T10:22:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/religious-orders-copping-out-of-abuse-compensation\/"},"modified":"2012-10-03T10:22:27","modified_gmt":"2012-10-03T10:22:27","slug":"religious-orders-copping-out-of-abuse-compensation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/religious-orders-copping-out-of-abuse-compensation\/","title":{"rendered":"Religious Orders  Copping Out of Abuse Compensation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Religious Orders\u00a0\u00a0Copping Out of Abuse\u00a0Compensation<\/h2>\n<p>October 1st, 2012 &#8211; Se\u00e1n Crowe TD<\/p>\n<div>Dublin  South West Representative Se\u00e1n Crowe TD has said it is \u201cmorally  indefensible\u201d that\u00a0 Religious Orders are refusing to meet their  obligations and\u00a0looking to\u00a0&#8220;cop\u00a0out&#8221; of \u00a0paying up to \u00a0half the  compensation for victims and survivors\u00a0of Residential Abuse.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Responding to\u00a0reports in the media\u00a0 suggesting\u00a0that Irish\u00a0taxpayers\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0asked\u00a0to  \u00a0pay the\u00a0bulk of the \u20ac1.47 billion fund\u00a0 allocated to provide redress  and supports for survivors of residential abuse,\u00a0Crowe said that\u00a0many  people believed that they\u00a0were getting away\u00a0with paying &#8220;buttons&#8221; when  consideration was taken into account of the extent of the  depravity\u00a0and\u00a0hurt they had\u00a0intiated on\u00a0thousands of helpless victims. A  &#8216;shoddy&#8217;\u00a0deal was agreed with the Religious Congretations and outgoing  Education Minister Michael Woods in the dying days of a\u00a0previous Fianna  Fail Government.<\/div>\n<p>Deputy\u00a0Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0said: \u201cIt is morally indefensible and unacceptable  that the Religious Orders are refusing to meet their 50% share of the  Compensation costs to pay for Redress for Survivors of Residential  Abuse.<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThe current situation can no longer continue and at the very least the  Congregations must act\u00a0 and release the balance of the promised\u00a0\u20ac110  million funding\u00a0needed to pay for the Statutory Fund, so  that\u00a0\u00a0basic\u00a0supports needed\u00a0to help\u00a0survivors who suffered under the  \u2018care\u2019 of the Religious Orders can be put in place.<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen this Legislation was debated earlier in the year in the D\u00e1il,\u00a0I  \u00a0put forward amendments that if accepted, would have set a date for  payment by the Congregations of the money needed to pay for the services  covered by the Statutory Fund and\u00a0\u00a0suggested substantial financial  penalties\u00a0 be imposed should the payment\u00a0deadline not be met.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEducation Minister Ruair\u00ed Quinn is right to point out the  moral\u00a0\u00a0obligations and prior agreements\u00a0\u00a0of the Religious Congregations  to honour their \u00a0commitments but words alone are not enough.<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThe  Religious Orders that ran the Institutions and\u00a0Care homes where so much  of the \u00a0abuse and cruelty was inflicted\u00a0 have a collective  responsibility for what happened and\u00a0 must pay their share of  Compensation\u00a0for the remaining survivors of these hell holes.\u201d<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Religious Orders\u00a0\u00a0Copping Out of Abuse\u00a0Compensation October 1st, 2012 &#8211; Se\u00e1n Crowe TD Dublin South West Representative Se\u00e1n Crowe TD has said it is \u201cmorally indefensible\u201d that\u00a0 Religious Orders are refusing to meet their obligations and\u00a0looking to\u00a0&#8220;cop\u00a0out&#8221; of \u00a0paying up to \u00a0half the compensation for victims and survivors\u00a0of Residential Abuse.
