{"id":5281,"date":"2024-07-19T15:40:53","date_gmt":"2024-07-19T15:40:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=5281"},"modified":"2024-07-19T15:40:53","modified_gmt":"2024-07-19T15:40:53","slug":"motor-insurance-companies-continuing-to-rip-off-consumers-and-pocket-savings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/motor-insurance-companies-continuing-to-rip-off-consumers-and-pocket-savings\/","title":{"rendered":"Motor Insurance companies continuing to rip off consumers and pocket savings"},"content":{"rendered":"Sinn F\u00e9in TD for Dublin South West Se\u00e1n Crowe has said that the insurance industry is continuing to rip off consumers and pocket savings brought about by recent law reforms.<br \/><br \/>A survey on motor insurance, conducted by Sinn F\u00e9in Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty found 95% of the 1390 respondents stated that their premium had increased in the past 12 months, while 98% of respondents said they had made no claim against their policy in the same period.<br \/><br \/>Teachta Crowe said it was time to end the insurance rip-off, and that Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s legislation would hold the industry to account and apply downward pressure on insurance premiums.<br \/><br \/>Teachta Crowe said:<br \/><br \/>\u201cFor years, the industry made bogus claims that fraudulent claims were driving up insurance costs.<br \/><br \/>\u201cInformation received by my colleague Pearse Doherty was that the number of fraudulent claims that insurance companies were reporting to the Garda\u00ed was a small fraction of the 20% of all claims that they had previously claimed to be fraudulent.<br \/><br \/>\u201cPearse Doherty\u2019s legislation to strengthen consumer protections in their insurance contracts became law in 2019 and tipped the balance clearly in favour of policyholders.<br \/><br \/>\u201cSinn F\u00e9in then led a campaign to ban the unfair and discriminatory practice where insurance companies were artificially hiking the premiums of renewing customers.<br \/><br \/>\u201cIt is clear from the responses to Pearse Doherty\u2019s survey, however, that despite these reforms, the insurance industry is continuing to fail consumers. Prices are too high for workers and families while profits soar.<br \/><br \/>\u201cRespondents speak of being \u2018fleeced\u2019 and having to make increasingly tough choices.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThis is unacceptable, particularly at a time when motor insurance profits reached their highest level in more than a decade \u2013 reaching \u20ac159 million in 2022 alone.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThis industry continues to record bonanza profits, but it is clear that instead of passing on the substantial savings made from reduced claim costs to customers in full, insurance companies are pocketing the savings to bolster their profits.<br \/><br \/>\u201cSinn F\u00e9in\u2019s survey of motor insurance customers makes that very clear with 95% of the 1390 respondents stating that their premium had increased in the past 12 months, while 98% of respondents said they had made no claim against their policy in the same period.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThe purpose of reforms such as the Personal Injuries Guidelines was to deliver reduced prices for customers and small businesses, not increase industry profitability.<br \/><br \/>\u201cSinn F\u00e9in\u2019s legislation, the Judicial Council (Amendment) Bill in 2021, would require the insurance industry to report to the Central Bank detailing how it has or hasn\u2019t passed on these savings to customers \u2013 euro for euro.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThis would allow the D\u00e1il to hold the industry to account and apply downward pressure on prices.<br \/><br \/>\u201cIt is time now to end the delays, end the excuses, and take action.<br \/><br \/>\u201cIt is time to progress this Bill, protect consumers, and pressure the insurance industry to do the right thing and cut prices.\u201d <br \/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sinn F\u00e9in TD for Dublin South West Se\u00e1n Crowe has said that the insurance industry is continuing to rip off consumers and pocket savings brought about by recent law reforms.
