Crowe goes pink backing Breast Cancer<\/p>\n
Dublin South West representative Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0 has said he is “going pink” this month\u00a0 and will be wearing the pink ribbon in support of the Irish Cancer Society and Action Breast Cancer,\u00a0 in their efforts to raise awareness around the issue of breast cancer.<\/p>\n
Crowe publicly endorsed this week the Get the Girls campaign to highlight the issue of breast cancer and to raise money for breast cancer services and research.
Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n
\u201cFor over twenty years now the month of\u00a0 October has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month\u00a0 in Ireland and around the world. The pink ribbon or the wearing of pink has become synonymous with the campaign to raise awareness of this disease that has effected so many people that we know.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver 4,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year across the island of Ireland. Around 40 of these or, one per cent, will be men. In the North of Ireland , around 300 women die each year as a result of breast cancer.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Irish Cancer Society and Action Cancer run extensive breast screening services which have saved many lives. They\u00a0 also raise a huge amount of money to improve the outcome for patients and for research.<\/p>\n
This year the Irish Cancer Society has organised a new kind of pink initiative. It\u2019s called \u2018Get the Girls, www.getthegirls.ie\u2013 and its goal is to raise even more money than in previous years for breast cancer services and research.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to commend all of those involved in raising awareness around breast cancer and\u00a0 would urge anyone, men\u00a0 or woman, with the slightest concern to immediately contact their doctor or any of the campaign organisations, all of whom provide extensive information on their web sites.<\/p>\n
