Householders set to pay 3 times for water <\/a><\/h2>\n

Sinn F\u00e9in\u00a0TD\u00a0Se\u00e1n Crowe has described plans to charge householders for water as\u00a0unfair and that the new tax burden\u00a0will mean that\u00a0the public will be paying three times for their water if the government\u2019s plans to install water meters are not resisted.<\/div>\n

Crowe was speaking after questioning of\u00a0An Bord G\u00e1is CEO, John Mullins at the D\u00e1il Environment Committee.<\/div>\n

Deputy Sean Crowe\u00a0\u00a0said: \u201cAn Bord G\u00e1is Chief Executive Officer John Mullins\u00a0confirmed today that the public will now have to\u00a0pay at least\u00a0three times for their water.<\/div>\n
\u201cFirstly through general taxation, secondly through state subsidies and thirdly through domestic water meters.<\/div>\n

“Despite informing the Committee that Irish Water will be ready to bill households in January 2014 John Mullins, the project Chief Executive Officer, was unable to inform the\u00a0D\u00e1il Environment\u00a0Committee of the\u00a0real cost of the installation of these proposed\u00a0meters.<\/div>\n
According to the Local Authorities Professional Officers this project will cost the tax payer a whopping \u20ac1.2 billion.<\/div>\n

”\u00a0This Fine Gael \/Labour\u00a0Government are asking the public to write An Bord G\u00e1is a blank cheque and the hard pressed public will have to foot the actual\u00a0bill\u00a0in three different ways.<\/div>\n
\u201cThe Water Charge\u00a0project lies in tatters. The Government need to wake up to that fact.<\/div>\n

Initially\u00a0Junior\u00a0Minister Fergus O\u2019Dowd told the D\u00e1il\u00a0 that the installation of water meters would commence in 2012.<\/div>\n
This date was put back in April when Evironment\u00a0Minster Phil\u00a0Hogan claimed the installation would be done by 2014.<\/div>\n

Today John Mullins of Bord Gais said the installations would take over 30 months to complete, once they start, next year.<\/div>\n

Sinn F\u00e9in is \u00a0calling on the Government to abandon its\u00a0\u00a0ill-fated plan to install domestic water meters and\u00a0 water charges. The Government should\u00a0be\u00a0investing instead in upgrading our crumbling water system and dealing\u00a0with water leaks. They also should be\u00a0 responding to the\u00a0expected increased demand that will inevitably come in the near future for clean water by identifeying new sources and building new treatment plants across the country.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
