{"id":562,"date":"2012-11-14T10:10:31","date_gmt":"2012-11-14T10:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/the-outcome-of-the-childrens-referendum-has-been-broadly-welcomed-by-local-representative-sean-crowe-td\/"},"modified":"2012-11-14T10:10:31","modified_gmt":"2012-11-14T10:10:31","slug":"the-outcome-of-the-childrens-referendum-has-been-broadly-welcomed-by-local-representative-sean-crowe-td","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/the-outcome-of-the-childrens-referendum-has-been-broadly-welcomed-by-local-representative-sean-crowe-td\/","title":{"rendered":"The outcome of the Children\u2019s Referendum has been broadly welcomed by local representative Se\u00e1n Crowe TD."},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The outcome of the Children\u2019s Referendum has been broadly\u00a0welcomed by\u00a0local representative\u00a0Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0TD.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Crowe&#8217;s local\u00a0constituency\u00a0of Dublin South West had a  large no vote\u00a0\u00a0but the referendum was narrowly\u00a0passed and\u00a0said that  there was onus on\u00a0Government now, to put in place the legislation and  the resources needed to vindicate children\u2019s rights.<\/div>\n<p>Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0said<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile \u00a0welcoming the result of the  Children\u2019s Referendum it\u00a0is a clear that a lot more work needs to done  by Government to make\u00a0the rights and supports\u00a0for children\u00a0a reality.<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThe  government must now put in place the legislation necessary to give the  amendment legal effect. It must also put in place the resources needed  to vindicate children\u2019s rights, especially for vulnerable children who  require the protection of social services. It needs to match its words  with actions.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe low turnout was disappointing and it is doubtful that it would  have been any better had it been held on a weekday. For that reason the  experiment of Saturday voting should not be dismissed with on the basis  of this low turnout..<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThe relatively high \u2018No\u2019 vote in many\u00a0working-class communities is  significant. I believe it reflects deep mistrust of government and the  State as a result of the harsh and futile austerity regime of the Fine  Gael\/Labour government that is hitting many of\u00a0these communities worst.   Opposition to austerity is totally justified and Sinn F\u00e9in will  continue to\u00a0argue against it and for an alternative approach based on  fairness and equity.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;I don&#8217;t believe that those who voted no care any less about children and their many\u00a0concerns need to be awknowledged.<\/div>\n<p>\u201c Sinn F\u00e9in campaigned for a \u2018Yes\u2019 vote and for years we have been  calling for children\u2019s rights to be strengthened and enshrined\u00a0in the  Constitution.\u00a0 Our campaign\u00a0tried to get across to people the importance  of enhancing\u00a0the voice and the rights of Children.<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI would like to\u00a0commend all those who campaigned for a \u2018Yes\u2019 vote  and equally important all those\u00a0who actually\u00a0turned out to vote.<\/div>\n<p>The people have spoken and\u00a0it is time now for Government \u00a0to implement the people\u2019s decision.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The outcome of the Children\u2019s Referendum has been broadly\u00a0welcomed by\u00a0local representative\u00a0Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0TD.
