{"id":582,"date":"2013-01-05T19:18:01","date_gmt":"2013-01-05T19:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-congratulates-arab-israeli-mp-on-winning-her-court-case\/"},"modified":"2013-01-05T19:18:01","modified_gmt":"2013-01-05T19:18:01","slug":"crowe-congratulates-arab-israeli-mp-on-winning-her-court-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-congratulates-arab-israeli-mp-on-winning-her-court-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowe congratulates Arab Israeli MP on winning her court case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Crowe congratulates Arab <span class=\"il\">Israeli<\/span> MP on winning her court case<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Trade and Diaspora, Se\u00e1n Crowe TD, has congratulated Arab <span class=\"il\">Israeli<\/span> MP, Hanin Zoabi, on winning her Supreme Court case to allow her to run  in Israel\u2019s general election which takes place on January 22.<\/p>\n<p>Hanin Zoabi, a member of the <span class=\"il\">Israeli<\/span>-Arab party Balad, was originally banned from running in the election by the <span class=\"il\">Israeli<\/span> General Election Committee because she was a passenger on the 2010  Freedom Flotilla to Gaza (also known as the Mavi Marmama), which tried  to break the illegal blockade of Gaza. On the flotilla nine Turkish  activists were killed by <span class=\"il\">Israeli<\/span> commandos, intent on stopping the flotilla reaching Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Crowe said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to pass on my congratulations to Ms Zoabi MP and commend her for winning her case in the <span class=\"il\">Israeli<\/span> Supreme Court by a unanimous decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision to ban her was an attack on democracy in Israel and her  victory in the Supreme Court shows that there was no legal basis to ban  her from running in the upcoming general elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the court decision is a victory for common sense and natural  justice, it does not prove that Israel is an open and inclusive  democracy. The ruling does not stop the threats, intimidation and  violence that Ms Zoabi faces on daily basis, needing special protection  after receiving death threats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight-wing parties, including the ruling Lukid party, have stated that they will continue their efforts to bar her from the <span class=\"il\">Israeli<\/span> Parliament after the January 22 elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs Zoabi is the first female Arab <span class=\"il\">Israeli<\/span> to be elected to Israel\u2019s Parliament on an Arab party\u2019s ticket and she bravely stands up for the rights of Arab <span class=\"il\">Israelis<\/span>,  who make up approximately 20 per cent of Israel\u2019s population.
