Crowe Welcomes Return of\u00a0Uganda Aid Money<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Trade and Diaspora, Se\u00e1n Crowe TD, has welcomed the news\u00a0that \u20ac4 million of Irish Aid\u2019s money to Uganda that was\u00a0discovered to be\u00a0misappropriated has now\u00a0been repaid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deputy Crowe said:<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI welcome the news of Uganda Governments\u00a0return of the \u20ac4 million worth of Irish Aid that was misappropriated in October 2012. I hope that this shows a renewed commitment by the Ugandan Government to reduce corruption at all levels and to hold those responsible\u00a0for the \u00a0misappropriation of the irish money\u00a0\u00a0to account. <\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo maintain its current public support Irish Aid must continue to work towards being one of the most accountable and transparent government aid programmes in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis funding controversy has renewed focus on the Irelands Aid programme and it is clear to see that Irish Aid, along with other donors, has helped significantly to reduce poverty in Uganda since it became a recipient partner country\u00a0 in 1994. Poverty has halved in the country over the last two decades and the\u00a0\u00a0development aid from Ireland has played significant role in this welcome outcome.\u00a0\u00a0There are\u00a0 also now 5.8 million more students in primary school since 1997, and the\u00a0 spread of HIV has been reduced from 18% in the 1990s to 6% today. <\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDisadvantaged Ugandan citizens should not be made\u00a0suffer because of an\u00a0act of\u00a0fraud by a few highly placed\u00a0 corrupt individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIrish Aid to Uganda remains suspended pending the completion of the Ugandan Auditor General\u2019s investigation into the misappropriation, which is expected to take another few months.\u00a0I am confident and extremely \u00a0\u00a0hopeful that when this investigation report is completed it \u00a0will\u00a0begin to clarify\u00a0some of the many of the concerns that people have in relation to this particular\u00a0misappropriation of a\u00a0substantial\u00a0 amount of\u00a0Irish taxpayers money.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
