{"id":603,"date":"2013-02-22T10:18:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-22T10:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-calls-on-government-to-back-off-frontline-workers-wages\/"},"modified":"2013-02-22T10:18:00","modified_gmt":"2013-02-22T10:18:00","slug":"crowe-calls-on-government-to-back-off-frontline-workers-wages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-calls-on-government-to-back-off-frontline-workers-wages\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowe calls on Government to back off frontline workers wages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Crowe calls on Government to back off frontline workers wages<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Dublin South West representative Se\u00e1n Crowe TD challenged the government\u2019s efforts to force frontline workers to acquiesce to substantial cuts in wages and in their terms and conditions of employment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Crowe said he wholeheartedly supported the demand that the Government \u201cback off frontline workers and start looking to the top of the public sector to reduce their <span> <\/span>pay and pension bill.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The Tallaght based Deputy speaking after a huge gathering of Public Sector workers in Basketball Arena in Tallaght outlined the difficulties and hardship that are facing staff on a daily basis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cFrom the begining of negotiations on a successor to the Croke Park agreement, the government has consistently warned of compulsory redundancies in the public sector. It then threatened<span> <\/span>more cuts including that of core pay.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201c We know from the government\u2019s own figures that low and middle income public sector workers have seen their pay significantly reduced between pay cuts and the Fianna F\u00e1il\/ Green Party <span> <\/span>pension levy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cThere are now two and sometimes three tiers of pay for workers doing exactly the same job.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">New graduate teachers and nurses are being asked to take huge cuts in basic pay and quite rightly have highlighted this gross inequality.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Sadly this is the kind of inequity that <span> <\/span>the current <span> <\/span>government <span> <\/span>is trying to replicate right across the public service despite the rhetoric of <span> <\/span>labour ministers.<span> <\/span><span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cPublic sector workers are also <span> <\/span>generally working harder, longer and for less money \u2013 particularly those at the frontline who have seen their numbers depleted over the last two years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cBy contrast those at the top have been protected. Bonanza pay and pensions remain in place. And the government still without any embarrassment breaks its own pay cap for its well-paid special advisors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cThe government needs to back off frontline workers and start looking to the top of the public sector to reduce the pay and pension bill.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cIt needs to stop disproportionately targeting frontline workers who have already contributed so much for more cuts and move to tackle the gold plated pensions and high pay still enjoyed by current and former Taoisigh, Ministers and senior civil servants.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cAttacking pay from the bottom up is not a reforming measure. It\u2019s the cowards option.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cSenior managers and office holders including the Taoiseach are paid more than their European counterparts. On taking up office the French Presidency Francois Holland cut his own pay by 30%. By contrast on entering government the Taoiseach Enda Kenny reduced his lavish salary by a mere 6%.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cThe protection afforded to high rollers in the public sector contrasts starkly with the plans of the government to slash the wages of frontline workers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cIn the Taoiseach\u2019s own Department two of the Special Advisors are paid \u20ac168,000 while in the Department of Social protection the Special advisor to Joan Burton receives \u20ac127,000.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cThis government who promised radical reform cannot with any credibility call for cuts to pay in these negotiations while it continues to protect the lavish pay and pension pots of ministers and senior civil servants.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crowe calls on Government to back off frontline workers wages Dublin South West representative Se\u00e1n Crowe TD challenged the government\u2019s efforts to force frontline workers to acquiesce to substantial cuts in wages and in their terms and conditions of employment.
