Home Tax –\u00a0A Tax Too Far for Too\u00a0Many – Crowe <\/span><\/h2>\n

Sinn F\u00e9in\u00a0representative for Dublin South West\u00a0Se\u00e1n Crowe TD\u00a0has said the Family Home Tax will be \u201cunsustainable for many\u00a0struggling families and individuals\u00a0and that the legislation being rushed through the D\u00e1il at this time\u00a0shows the government is \u201cout-of-touch with citizens and their\u00a0economic reality\u201d.<\/p>\n

Deputy\u00a0Se\u00e1n Crowe\u00a0said;<\/p>\n

\u201cLate Tuesday night\u00a0the Government rushed through their second piece of legislation on the Family Home Tax. It is a tax\u00a0that will financially cripple families and many\u00a0individuals\u00a0 who are already in financial hock to the\u00a0banks and their various\u00a0off \u00a0shoots.<\/div>\n
“Once again the Government’s\u00a0large majority and\u00a0arrogant attitude\u00a0resulted in little or no debate and on this and\u00a0on probably one of\u00a0the most important issues facing\u00a0Irish people at this particular time in their lives.<\/div>\n

\u201cThe Cabinet in their wisdom and with\u00a0their large salaries will not feel the effect of this new tax, but hundreds of thousands of others in mortgage arrears, unemployed or simply struggling month to month will\u00a0experience \u00a0it acutely. The government needs to get out of their comfortable well cushioned\u00a0seats and recognise the hardship they are creating and maintaining with their policies.<\/p>\n

\u201cSadly this particular\u00a0legislation\u00a0seems to be\u00a0getting rushed through without any\u00a0proper debate so that the Revenue Commissioners can post out letters of demand over the\u00a0next couple of days. This\u00a0will be\u00a0another bill on top of the\u00a0increases in motor tax, electricity, gas,\u00a0fuel\u00a0and other direct and indirect taxes.<\/div>\n

“The government is also\u00a0hell-bent on taxing water as soon as\u00a0they can\u00a0and\u00a0comes on top\u00a0of five years of austerity budgets.<\/div>\n

\u201cSurely at some point\u00a0someone in this\u00a0government\u00a0will\u00a0\u00a0recognise that the\u00a0very\u00a0same \u00a0people that they are constantly\u00a0targeting\u00a0are carrying\u00a0too\u00a0great a tax\u00a0burden and it\u00a0is not\u00a0sustainable. This should be clear from their own figures that \u00a0highlight\u00a0the mortgage arrears crisis, the sky-high rates of unemployment and\u00a0the highest\u00a0level of\u00a0emigration since An Gorta M\u00f3r<\/p>\n

\u201cSinn Fein’s proposal to share the burden\u00a0by introducing\u00a0an alternative Wealth Tax would be a fairer alternative and\u00a0would not cripple families or dampen\u00a0our stagnant\u00a0domestic economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnlike other parties\u00a0we have\u00a0been clear and consistent opposition to\u00a0this Family Home Tax.<\/div>\n

“Its an\u00a0unfair tax, which\u00a0disregards stamp duty\u00a0or\u00a0management fees that have been\u00a0paid\u00a0and ignores even the householders ability to pay.<\/div>\n

“What happened this week in the D\u00e1il and the manner it was rushed through\u00a0was wrong.<\/div>\n
