{"id":923,"date":"2013-08-22T09:11:33","date_gmt":"2013-08-22T09:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=923"},"modified":"2013-10-29T07:31:29","modified_gmt":"2013-10-29T07:31:29","slug":"crowe-welcomes-new-blood-transfusion-service-for-haemochromatosis-sufferers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-welcomes-new-blood-transfusion-service-for-haemochromatosis-sufferers\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowe Welcomes New Blood Transfusion Service for  Haemochromatosis Sufferers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Crowe Welcomes New\u00a0Blood Transfusion Service for \u00a0Haemochromatosis Sufferers<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Local Tallaght\u00a0TD, S\u00e9an Crowe\u00a0has welcomed today\u2019s announcement that the Irish Blood Transfusion Service will begin a free phlebotomy or blood transfusion service for people with hereditary haemochromatosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Crowe said that thousands of people with the blood condition known as haemochromatosis will be able to donate to the blood supply, under a new programme launched by the Irish Blood Transfusion Service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Haemochromatosis is a hereditary condition in which excessive amounts of iron are absorbed from the diet and deposited in various organs. It is particularly prevalent in Celtic Countries and the gene that triggers the condition has been called the Celtic curse <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The new service\u00a0is now\u00a0available in Dublin\u00a0becoming active in\u00a0Cork from November of this year on a pilot basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0They hope \u00a0to be able to extend it to other towns and cities also \u00a0in the near future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Speaking today after the announcement, Deputy Crowe\u00a0said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI very much welcome this long awaited\u00a0decision by the Irish Blood Transfusion Service.\u00a0My party have long called for this facility to be put\u00a0in place to allow blood donations from haemochromatosis patients taken as part of their routine treatment and\u00a0added to the national blood stock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cUntil now, blood drawn from haemochromatosis patients was discarded due to\u00a0 IBTS policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe old policy didn&#8217;t make much sense, particularly for a service that is regularly critically short of blood at various high demand times during the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0This new logical\u00a0move will now\u00a0bring Ireland in to\u00a0line with many other countries that have a high number of haemochromatosis suffers<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt is envisaged\u00a0by the\u00a0irish Blood Transfusion\u00a0Service\u00a0\u00a0that when the pilot programme is in place donations from hemochromatosis patients will make up to 4% of total donations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere is a general consensus among\u00a0 Irish\u00a0\u00a0haemochromatosis sufferers, that this pilot programme will be rolled out on a state-wide basis and at the earliest possible timescale.\u00a0I and my colleagues in Sinn Fein\u00a0will continue to lobby for this forward looking\u00a0development.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crowe Welcomes New\u00a0Blood Transfusion Service for \u00a0Haemochromatosis Sufferers Local Tallaght\u00a0TD, S\u00e9an Crowe\u00a0has welcomed today\u2019s announcement that the Irish Blood Transfusion Service will begin a free phlebotomy or blood transfusion service for people with hereditary haemochromatosis.
