{"id":1042,"date":"2013-10-21T11:58:35","date_gmt":"2013-10-21T11:58:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=1042"},"modified":"2013-10-29T07:31:27","modified_gmt":"2013-10-29T07:31:27","slug":"crowe-calls-for-clarity-on-youth-unemployment-remarks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/crowe-calls-for-clarity-on-youth-unemployment-remarks\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowe calls for clarity on youth unemployment remarks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Crowe calls for\u00a0clarity on youth unemployment remarks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dublin South West Sinn F\u00e9in TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has called on Labour TD Eamon Maloney to clarify his remarks about young people and their so called lifestyle choice of sitting at home all day watching flat screen TV&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Crowe said that the \u00a0government and its deputies\u00a0need to urgently create jobs and speed up and expand initiatives aimed at tackling youth joblessness instead of blaming the unemployed. &#8220;That means creating decent\u00a0jobs&#8221;, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Crowe said;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent CSO figures released\u00a0suggests that\u00a0there are 2,249 people under the age of 25 unemployed in the\u00a0Tallaght Social Welfare office and claiming unemployment benefit. I suspect that the unemployment figure is much higher, but many people are so disillusioned they are unsure how to claim their benefits or access supports which could help them\u00a0upskill towards\u00a0 meaningful employment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately we also know that the jobs don&#8217;t exist and traditional employers in this area are long gone and empty boarded up\u00a0factories are our\u00a0daily reminder.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t for a minute believe\u00a0young people\u00a0are\u00a0sitting at home all day watching flat screen TVs seven days a week\u00a0and given the first real opportunity at getting a decent job they would literally \u00a0jump at the chance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am hoping that local Labour TD\u00a0Eamon Maloney was misquoted or his remarks have been misconstrued by the media in this case.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He does, however,\u00a0need to give an urgent\u00a0rational explanation to the hundreds of\u00a0thousands of young people\u00a0trapped on the unemployment scrapheap by his and other\u00a0previous governments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike a lot of people I am very concerned with the slow pace of the implementation of the youth initiative and youth guarantee. I am also concerned with the low level of investment, particularly from the Irish government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes the Government needs to speed up and expand initiatives aimed at tackling youth joblessness and make full use of the European Youth Guarantee fund.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes this issue needs to be one of the key priorities of the Government or we will continue to see our young people emigrate or get trapped in long-term unemployment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But at the end of the day if jobs are not there, it is not the fault of young people if they are forced to depend on the safety net of social welfare because there are no other realistic alternatives for them to survive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eamon Maloney and others need to focus on attracting jobs\u00a0and creating the conditions where the full potential of these young people is utilised and he needs to stop blaming\u00a0young people\u00a0for\u00a0his\u00a0government&#8217;s\u00a0<wbr \/>failure to live up to its jobs promises.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crowe calls for\u00a0clarity on youth unemployment remarks Dublin South West Sinn F\u00e9in TD, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has called on Labour TD Eamon Maloney to clarify his remarks about young people and their so called lifestyle choice of sitting at home all day watching flat screen TV&#8217;s.
