{"id":1981,"date":"2014-12-02T11:11:46","date_gmt":"2014-12-02T11:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=1981"},"modified":"2014-12-02T11:11:46","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T11:11:46","slug":"former-uae-ambassador-needs-to-fork-out-compensation-crowe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/former-uae-ambassador-needs-to-fork-out-compensation-crowe\/","title":{"rendered":"Former UAE Ambassador Needs to Fork Out Compensation- Crowe"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has called on the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Foreign Affairs Minister, Charlie Flanagan, to ensure that the full amount owed to 3 Filipino domestic works is paid by the former United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador to Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Crowe said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UAE Ambassador to Ireland \u00a0and has wife have been found guilty by a workers rights tribunal \u00a0of treating three domestic servants, who worked in their Dublin residence, literally like slaves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UAE Department of Foreign Affairs have now recalled the Ambassador to Abu Dhabi and say they are carrying out an\u00a0investigation into this controversy. It is now being reported that he will be replaced as Ambassador to Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe three women, all originally from the Philippines,\u00a0began working for the family in the UAE but eventually\u00a0moved to Ireland with them in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile working for the former Ambassador these domestic workers were paid less than \u20ac2 an hour, and the tribunal heard they lived in extremely cramp conditions, had no days off, and had their passports confiscated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe women were eventually able to escape from their captivity in 2012 with help of the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Irish Employment Appeals Tribunal has found the Ambassador and his wife guilty, and ordered them to pay the three woman \u20ac80,000 each, or \u20ac240,000 in total. Unfortunately they are continuing to claim diplomatic impunity and somehow wash their hands of their direct involvement in this exploitation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Crowe continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe actions of the former Ambassador and his spouse were completely unacceptable in any democratic society and\u00a0the UAE Department of Foreign Affairs should take steps to sanction this behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Irish\u00a0Minister for Foreign Affairs, Charlie Flanagan, needs to ensure that the \u20ac240,000 is paid in full.\u00a0 The three exploited women should get recognition of their basic rights\u00a0and the financial redress that was awarded by the Irish labour court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese women\u00a0need the full and comprehensive support of our\u00a0political system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ENDS<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Se\u00e1n Crowe, has called on the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Foreign Affairs Minister, Charlie Flanagan, to ensure that the full amount owed to 3 Filipino domestic works is paid by the former United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador to Ireland.
