{"id":2171,"date":"2015-05-12T10:19:28","date_gmt":"2015-05-12T10:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/?p=2171"},"modified":"2015-05-12T10:26:20","modified_gmt":"2015-05-12T10:26:20","slug":"british-government-plans-on-human-rights-convention-breach-of-agreement-crowe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seancrowe.ie\/home\/british-government-plans-on-human-rights-convention-breach-of-agreement-crowe\/","title":{"rendered":"British Government plans on Human Rights Convention breach of agreement \u2013 Crowe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Se\u00e1n Crowe TD,\u00a0 a member of the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good\u00a0Friday\u00a0Agreement (GFA), has called on the new British Government to fully implement their obligations under the Good\u00a0Friday\u00a0Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Crowe\u00a0 also expressed his concerns of the new Government\u2019s proposed plans to scrap the Human Rights Act, which could see Britain pull out of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), and which in turn\u00a0 would breach the GFA.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Se\u00e1n Crowe said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLast week the Conservative Party won an absolute majority in the Westminster elections and there is mounting concern in Ireland over some of the plans this new Government have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last outgoing British Government had failed to uphold outstanding commitments in relation to the Good\u00a0Friday\u00a0and St. Andrew\u2019s Agreements.\u00a0This includes the failure to implement an independent\u00a0 inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA civil inquiry into the Dublin and Monaghan bombings has been stonewalled and sidelined. The Acht na Gaeilge continues to be ignored. There has been no movement on a Bill of Rights. There are no working plans or strategies to address these outstanding matters of critical importance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also major concerns with the new Tory Government\u2019s pledge to scrap the Human Rights Act and pull out of the European Convention on Human Rights. This would directly breach what was agreed in the GFA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Irish Government as co-guarantor of the GFA\u00a0has a critical part to play and needs to oppose any moves by Britain to roll back from key human rights commitments that it signed up in the GFA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is also an onus on the Irish Government as co-guarantor\u00a0 to set out\u00a0 now a clear strategy for the full implementation of the Good\u00a0Friday\u00a0Agreement and all outstanding elements of previous agreements.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>ENDS<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Se\u00e1n Crowe TD,\u00a0 a member of the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good\u00a0Friday\u00a0Agreement (GFA), has called on the new British Government to fully implement their obligations under the Good\u00a0Friday\u00a0Agreement.
